Umbilical Hernia in Infants – Brief Overview
• Definition:
An umbilical hernia occurs when a small part of the intestine or fatty tissue bulges through the abdominal muscles near the belly button (navel).
• Cause:
It happens because the opening in the abdominal wall, where the umbilical cord passed through during pregnancy, doesn’t close completely after birth.
• Common Age:
Seen frequently in newborns, especially in premature and low birth-weight babies.
• Symptoms:
• Soft bulge or swelling near the navel, more noticeable when the baby cries, coughs, or strains.
• Usually painless and reducible (the bulge goes back when the baby is calm or lying down).
• Complications (Rare):
• Incarceration: The hernia gets trapped and can’t be pushed back.
• Strangulation: Blood supply to the trapped tissue is cut off — a medical emergency.
• Treatment:
• Most umbilical hernias close on their own by age 2–3 years.
• Surgery is advised if:
• The hernia persists beyond 4–5 years,
• Becomes very large, or
• Shows signs of complication (pain, redness, vomiting, non-reducible swelling).
• Prognosis:
Excellent — most cases resolve naturally without intervention.
