MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan Slams New Liquor Policy, Demands Immediate Withdrawal

Member of Parliament for Ladakh, Haji Hanifa Jan, has strongly opposed the Union Territory administration’s new excise policy and demanded its immediate and unconditional rollback. Speaking to the media in Kargil, the MP fiercely criticized the rationale behind opening new liquor outlets, calling the policy entirely flawed and highly detrimental to local society.
The MP questioned the administration's argument that liberalizing liquor licensing would help check the region's rising drug problem, stating that introducing one addiction to cure another makes no sense and will only amplify societal distress. Citing states like Bihar and Gujarat, he pointed out that women-led mass movements forced prohibition in those regions because alcohol addiction destroys entire families and breaks homes.
He emphasized that since Ladakh is a relatively small region with only two or three main access points, the administration should focus on completely blocking drug peddlers at these entry channels instead of opening liquor shops internally. He urged a synchronized crackdown on drug abuse by involving the administration, civil society groups, educational institutions, and religious organizations. Addressing the Lieutenant Governor's administration, the MP stated that the local public will not remain silent and will take to the streets if the policy is forced against public sentiment.
Responding to queries regarding the ongoing No-Confidence Motion and political reshuffle at the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil, MP Haji Hanifa Jan confirmed that the matter has been formally forwarded through the Deputy Commissioner to the UT administration. As per the statutory Act, the administration must notify a date within a month. He expressed confidence that the UT administration will take cognizance and resolve this swiftly so that the newly formed council can resume pending developmental works across the district.
