State-Level Folk Dance Competition Celebrates Sikkim’s Cultural Heritage

A State Level Folk Dance Competition celebrating the ethnic traditions and artistic heritage of Sikkim was held at Manan Bhawan, today.

Organised by the Tendong Lho Rum Faat Celebration Committee, (TLRFCC) the event had the presence of the Minister of Social Welfare, Printing & Stationery, Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Departments, Mr Samdup Lepcha as the chief guest. Also present were the Minister, Forest & Environment, Mines & Geology and Science & Technology Departments,Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, MLA cm Advisor Urban Development and Food & Civil Supplies Departments, Mr Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, Councillors, Adhyaksha Mangan District, Chairman Social Welfare Commission Board, Mr Nim Tshering Lepcha, officers from different departments, Padmashree Awardee Mr Jorden Lepcha, dignataries, participants from Nepal and Bhutan along with Students, teachers from six districts, and members of the Tendong Lho Rum Faat Celebration Committee (TLRFCC)

Chief Guest Ren Samdup Lepcha in his address emphasised the importance of preserving cultural identity through such initiatives. He encouraged everyone to contribute meaningfully to the community they were born into, to support those in need, and to use resources responsibly. He also emphasised the importance of sharing cultural traditions and preserving them for future generations. Commending the cultural performances, he urged all to participate in the upcoming Tendong Lho Rum Faat celebration an opportunity to walk together in unity and strengthen the social fabric of our society.

The highlight of the event, the Folk Dance Competition, showcased diverse traditional performances from across the state, reflecting the deep-rooted legacy and storytelling embedded in Sikkim’s indigenous dances.

During the event, a compelling skit on Rongnyu-Rungnyit brought to life the sacred mythology of the Lepcha people.

Esteemed jury members, cultural experts, and community leaders participated in the event, with feedback shared by a senior jury member, appreciating the talent and effort of all participating groups.

Around 17 cultural dance groups from different schools, colleges, youth organisations and clubs across the state participated in the competition.
Acknowledging the contribution of senior artists they were felicitated by the Cultural community of TLRFC.

Thereafter, the event had the declaration of results and distribution of certificates and mementoes to the participants by the dignitaries. The event also featured a digital release of a special music video.

The winners of the cultural competition are as follows:
1st position : Sir Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School,
2nd position: Sanchaman Limboo Government College, Gyalshing
3rd position: Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College

Earlier, Ms Ongmu Lepcha, delivered the welcome address setting the tone filled with cultural expression and community spirit.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Mr Phursang Lepcha, expressing gratitude to all guests, participants, volunteers, and the organising team.

MLA Challenge Cup at Kitam, Melli Enters Fourth Day with Enthusiastic Participation and Cultural Display

Kitam, Melli, Aug 7 | The MLA Challenge Cup Football Tournament, organized as part of the 79th Independence Day celebrations at Kitam in Melli Constituency, entered its fourth day with great energy and community participation.

The day’s events were graced by Shri Milan Silwal, a prominent social worker, who attended as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Guest of Honour Shri Dawa Bhutia, a government contractor, along with special guests Shri Mani Prakash Pradhan (Retired Chief Pay & Account Officer) and Smt. Nirmala Basnet (Govt Contractor). Other dignitaries present included Shri Prem Tshering Tamang, Mingma Sherpa, Tarunidhi Sharma, Shiva Chettri, Sova Rai, Milan Pradhan, Naina Darnal, Shri Binod Nepal (SRLM, Sumbuk Block), and Smt. Rejoice Rai (Treasurer, Sumbuk Block Development Society), among others.

The day began with colourful cultural performances by local students, highlighting the region’s vibrant traditions and setting a festive tone for the event. These performances were warmly received by the audience, contributing to the celebration of local talent and culture.

The highlight of the day was a thrilling football match between Paiyong FC and Darjeeling Dynamo. Paiyong FC showcased their dominance on the field with a decisive 4-0 victory, much to the delight of their supporters.

The ongoing tournament continues to attract large crowds, fostering unity and enthusiasm among the local communities. With each passing day, the MLA Challenge Cup strengthens the celebratory spirit of Independence Day in Melli.

The Inter-Sikkim Men’s Volleyball Tournament, organized by the Rising Star Committee at 4th Mile, J.N. Road, Gangtok, continued today with great energy and excitement.

The event was graced by Mr. K.B. Giri, Chairman of the Central Joint Action Committee, as the Chief Guest. The Special Guests for the day were Mr. Kesang Dorjee Bhujel and Mr. Gopal Pradhan.

The tournament is proudly led by the Chief Patron, Nita Mukhia ( ), a well-known social worker.

A thrilling match took place today between Noktok Rongli and Chopshu, with both teams showcasing exceptional skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

District-Level 79th Independence Day Celebrations begins in Soreng District

The district level celebrations of the 79th Independence Day commenced with a vibrant inaugural programme featuring a football tournament and cultural performances at Jautar Stadium, Soreng, today.

The event was graced by MLA (Soreng-Chakung) Mr Aditya Golay who attended as the Chief Guest and was accompanied by Zilla Adakhsya Ms Tila Devi Gurung, Upa Adakshya Mr CB Kami, Advisor (IPR) Mr Suk Bahadur S***a, Zilla Panchayat Members, Panchayat Members, DC (Soreng) Mr Dhiraj Subedi, SP Mr Nahkul Pradhan, ADC-I Mr Dr Bista, ADC- II Mr Santosh Kumar Allay, ADC -(Dev) Mr Gaayas Pega, Chairman (Sikkim Agriculture and Horticulture Board) Mr CK Rana, Chairman (ST Welfare Board) Mr PK S***a, OSD to MLA (Soreng Chakung) Mr Rajen Basnett, OSD (Excise Department) Mr Raymund Thapa, Heads of Departments, Officers and Officials of various line departments, BDOs, Principals, Headmasters, Teachers, Members representing various associations, students and general public.

The event commenced with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by MLA (Soreng-Chakung) Mr Aditya Golay, which was followed by releasing of pigeons as a symbol of love, hope, prosperity and prayers for the successful completion of the celebration.

MLA (Soreng-Chakung) Mr Aditya Golay addressed the gathering on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day celebrations. He welcomed everyone present and extended his heartfelt gratitude to the organising committee. He also, congratulated all involved for conducting the event successfully.

On the occasion, he further thanked the Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr Prem Singh Tamang, for his continued support and encouragement.

In his address, he shared his vision for Soreng to achieve the recognition of becoming India’s second Nomad Village, taking inspiration from the recently inaugurated India’s First Digital Nomad Village at Yakten in Pakyong district. He then, stressed on the importance of community engagement and unity, calling upon all stakeholders to work together towards the successful implementation of the project.

Additionally, he spoke about the need to promote local talents in sports, with a special focus on football. He encouraged the young and rising sportspersons of the district and highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for them to grow.

He also briefly outlined few upcoming projects in the district that includes Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Budang, a Science Centre and the LD Kazi Culture and Adventure Centre. He stated that these initiatives aim to boost local employment and move towards developing Soreng as an educational and cultural hub.

While concluding his address, he touched upon various development sectors currently in progress and highlighted an event envisioned and directed by the Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr Prem Singh Tamang, stating that August 10 will be observed as “Aama Samman Diwas” every year, beginning this year and urged everyone to be a part of this historic event.

Initially, the welcome note was addressed by DC (Soreng) Mr Dhiraj Subedi, who extended his warm greetings to all and thanked the Independence Day Celebration Committee (IDCC) for their efforts in making the celebration a success.

He then, expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards MLA (Soreng-Chakung) Mr Aditya Golay for his continuous encouragement and support. While highlighting the theme of the celebrations “Empowering Youth, Honouring Freedom ” he emphasized the importance of promoting local talent and collective action. He also touched upon the sub-theme “Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan” urging the community to work together towards a drug-free society.

In closing, he called upon Panchayat Members to actively support the “Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyaan” as envisioned by the Government of India and Sikkim.

The event also had Tug of War matches in both girls and boys categories, with enthusiastic participation from all teams. The results for the girls category are as follows-
1. Timburbong GPU won against Budang GPU
2. Chumbung GPU won against Chota Samdong, Arubotey GPU
3. Mangsari GPU won against Malbasey GPU

The results for the boys category are as follows-
1. Lower Timburbong GPU won against Singling GPU
2. Soreng GPU won against Mendagoan GPU

A football match was played between Don Bosco School, Malbasey and Rinchenpong Government Senior Secondary School, in which Don Bosco School, Malbasey emerged victorious.

Sikkim Government to Set Up “Aama Suvidha Ghar” at Rangpo for Aama Samman Diwas

Gangtok, August 07: Under the visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, the Chief Minister’s Office is pleased to announce the establishment of a specially designed facility named “Aama Suvidha Ghar” at the venue of the upcoming Aama Samman Diwas, to be held on August 10, 2025, at Rangpo Ground.

The Aama Samman Diwas celebration is a state-level event to honour the invaluable contributions of mothers in shaping families, communities, and the future of Sikkim. To support the participation of women, especially mothers with young children, the Aama Suvidha Ghar will offer a comprehensive range of women-centric facilities focused on convenience, hygiene, safety, and care.

Facilities at “Aama Suvidha Ghar”:

The special facility will be equipped with the following amenities:
• Breastfeeding Room – Providing privacy and comfort for nursing mothers.
• Crèche Facility – Safe and supervised space for children, allowing mothers to attend the program with peace of mind.
• Changing Room – Clean, private spaces for mothers to care for their infants and toddlers.
• Sanitary Napkin Vending Machines – Ensuring access to menstrual hygiene products for women attendees.
• Health Care Corner – A basic medical aid station with provisions for first-aid and health-related support.
• Police Booth – For ensuring women’s safety and providing any necessary assistance.
• Clean and Accessible Washrooms – Dedicated sanitation facilities for women, maintained throughout the event.

This initiative is being implemented with the support of the Department of Women, Child, Senior Citizens and Divyangjan Welfare, in close coordination with the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat. The facility will be staffed and managed by Aanganwadi workers, who will serve as volunteers and assist women in availing the services provided.

This unique setup reflects the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s commitment to inclusive governance and his deep respect for the role of mothers in society. The ‘Aama Suvidha Ghar’ is not just a facility—it is a gesture of care and gratitude towards the women of Sikkim.

The Government of Sikkim warmly invites all mothers and women from across the state to attend Aama Samman Diwas and make use of the facilities at the Aama Suvidha Ghar.
