Tasmanian fungi safari: Into the blue 💙🍄

This extraordinary Entoloma sp. was an almost midnight blue — cap and stipe, contrasting dramatically with its pale gills.

But exactly which Entoloma we can’t confidently say.

And perhaps that’s not surprising in Tasmania.

A landmark 14-year study of Tasmania’s pinkgills, published in 2012, documented 90 species of Entoloma. Remarkably, 73 of them — around 81% — were new to science.

Known as the pinkgills, Entoloma can be extraordinarily colourful. Australian species range through blues, purples and greens to yellows, oranges, reds and pinks.

And despite all that colour, one of their defining features is something you don’t necessarily see when they’re young: as the spores mature, the gills typically take on the pinkish tones that give the group its common name.

For now, this spectacular blue Tasmanian beauty remains simply Entoloma sp. — another little piece of Australia’s fungal diversity still waiting for a name.

Day 21/2. This is one of my favourite Mycena interrupta photos. It was at the top of a dead sapling about 1.5m high. Everything was wet, including the mushrooms, which are very small (about 5mm across the cap). I was particularly attracted by the refraction/reflection from the water/blue mushroom interface. It is interesting that there was no water below the cap, only on top.
