The Timeless Rasa Tradition of the Abhiras 💛🌳
More than 37,000 Ahir (Abhira) women in the last month of 2023 gathered in Dwarka, Gujarat, to perform the sacred Rasa, a breathtaking expression of devotion to Lord Krishna and a living celebration of an ancient cultural tradition.
Ancient texts such as the Harivamsha and the Bhagavata Purana describe Krishna's Rasa with Abhiras of Vraja.
The classical Rasa tradition includes nine different dances, each with its own purpose, rhythm, and symbolism, culminating in the Mahārāsa. Six dances portray Krishna dancing with the Abhira women in different formations, while three are performed by the women alone.
