In the much awaited Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, United States President Donald Trump expressed confidence in his ability to make concrete progress towards securing a ceasefire in Ukraine at the meeting.

Putin received the red carpet treatment with a lengthy handshake by President Trump as he deplaned at the Joint Base military facility in the Alaska.

The warm greeting set a tone for what were always going to be tough negotiations:
While the meeting was anticipated to take about seven hours, but it wrapped up in less than three hours. Trump and Putin addressed a gathering of journalists after the talks with relatively brief pre-prepared statements. Neither leader took any questions.
Putin said his country is committed to ending the war, but the conflict’s “primary causes” must be eliminated for an agreement to be long-lasting.

Donald Trump praised the “extremely productive meeting”, in which he said “many points were agreed to”, there is a “very good chance of getting there” – referring to a ceasefire – but conceded that there remain sticking points with Moscow, including at least one “significant” one.

The Russian leader has become an increasingly maligned and isolated figure in the West since waging war on Ukraine in 2022.

But on Friday, that ended, with a red carpet welcome, a flypast by US fighter jets and warm applause from Trump.
Before the meeting, it was widely anticipated that Putin would attempt to dilute peace talks with talk of bilateral trade and cooperation.

Trump had asserted that there would be no discussion of business with Putin until the pair had made substantive progress on bringing about a ceasefire in Ukraine.

This plan, actually, seems to have been derailed somewhat, with the Russian president saying in his post-meeting statement that the pair discussed their collaboration in the areas of tech and space.

“It’s clear that US and Russian investment and business cooperation has tremendous potential. Russia and USA can offer each other so much. In trade, digital, high-tech and in space exploration, [and] we see that Arctic cooperation is also very possible,”
Russia has previously tried to pitch its vast reserves of rare earth minerals.

Donald Trump has previously asserted that he hopes to host a trilateral meeting on ending the war in Ukraine very soon, this time attended by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskyy, too. In Alaska, the US leader said he would now call NATO officials and Ukrainian president to discuss the meeting.

Air strike in Mayanmar killed 23 people took shelter in a Budhists monastry

An air strike on a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar's earthquake-struck area has killed 23 people , according to witnesses..

The resistance member — who spoke on condition of anonymity — said 23 civilians were killed when a jet fighter dropped a bomb on a building in the village's monastery midnight

They said more than 150 people from nearby villages had been taking shelter there to avoid recent fighting in the region.

Myanmar's independent Democratic Voice of Burma online media reported the number of death could be as high as 30, however the number could not be immediately confirmed.

The military did not immediately comment on the incident at the monastery, located about 35 kilometres north-west of Myanmar.

In the past, the army has said it only attacks legitimate targets of war and has accused the resistance forces of being terrorists.

The monastery housed about 200 people displaced by nearby fighting between the army and pro-democracy forces, The nature of the attack could not immediately be verified.

Military conducting air strikes despite quake
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power from the elected government in February 2021, triggering a civil war.

After peaceful demonstrations were put down with lethal force, many opponents of military rule took up arms.
However, the military has continued to launch air strikes and artillery attacks on rebel-controlled areas, including those already destroyed by the earthquake, which killed almost 3,700 people.

The military has increasingly used air strikes to counter opposition forces, including the armed People's Defence Force in the area, a stronghold of armed resistance.

The poll is widely seen as an attempt to normalise the military's seizure of power through the ballot box and to deliver a result that ensures the generals retain control.

Baloch liberation army attacked various istablishnents of governnent and military in Pakistan

n one of the most sweeping and coordinated offensives witnessed in years, the rebellious outfit Balochistan Liberation Front ) launched a wave of attacks late Tuesday across multiple districts of Balochistan, targeting government and military installations.

The group claimed responsibility for what it called "Operation Dawn vowing a new chapter in its decades-long fight against the Pakistani state,
At least 17 attacks were reported, disrupting communication lines, damaging administrative infrastructure, and striking military checkpoints.

While Pakistani authorities have yet to provide a full account of the damage, local sources reported significant disruptions in affected areas.

In a statement, BLF spokesperson described the campaign as “a beginning in the Baloch national liberation war,” asserting that the operation stretched from the Makran coast, underscoring the group’s extended operational reach.
“The resistance has entered a new phase,” he said. “Operation dawn is designed to demonstrate that Baloch fighters are capable of launching large-scale, synchronised operations.

He claimed the attacks were carefully planned to inflict both "human and material losses" on security forces, And some of the details remain largely unverified.

The scale and precision of the strikes suggest an insurgency in Pakistan’s south-western province, where grievances over resource exploitation, political marginalisation, and military presence have long fueled the sentiment.

As of Wednesday morning, security forces had begun search operations in the targeted districts, while communication services remained down in parts of Panjgur.

The BLF said it would release more information on the operation’s outcomes once it concludes. Meanwhile, the assault has once again drawn attention to the fragile security situation in Balochistan, where periodic flare-ups of armed rebellion continue to challenge Islamabad’s hold over the resource-rich areas.
