STAR HOPPER

STAR HOPPER Star Hopper is a trans-led India-based entertainment and media company working at the intersection of film and culture. Will we ever inhibit such a space?

Our focus lies in crafting narratives that are brown, q***r, and women-led. Founded in 2019 by Asawari Jagushte and Varsha Panikar, Star Hopper is a home for South Asian LGBTQIA++ and underrepresented voices to tell their stories on their own terms. We’re an India-based entertainment and media company creating across film, TV, commercials, and hybrid works. At the intersection of film and culture,

we blend deeply rooted South Asian narratives with cutting-edge innovation—immersive VR theater, AR experiences, NFT projects, and games. Our verticals include the Underground Film Observatory (UFO), a platform spotlighting films and moving image works by GSM, q***r, trans, GNC, and women filmmakers, and Riot Ink Press (RIP), our publishing arm amplifying bold, diverse voices through zines, books, and more. With our finger on the pulse of changing global politics and technology, we collaborate with culture-forward labels, brands, agencies, clients, and various arts, culture, and social organisations both in and outside of India. We aim to work with partners who share our commitment to equitable authorship, authenticity, and meaningful cultural engagement. We consider ourselves explorers, hopping through the cosmos of storytelling, dreaming up tomorrows, and seeking meaning in the unknown. In that unknowing lies power: the power to rewrite, to re-imagine, and to build expansive and bolder futures. We don’t know. But we hope, we dream, and we try—one story at a time.

What makes a story q***r? It’s more than LGBTQIA+ characters—it’s about breaking binaries, embracing fluidity, and rewriting the rules of storytelling. From the unspoken spaces between identities to reimagining narrative structures, q***r stories challenge, disrupt, and redefine.

We explore this in our latest blog on UFO. Check it out:

A proud moment for the entire Words of Pride team as we celebrate the campaign’s success at the One Asia Creative Awards! 🏳️‍🌈

With a Gold for Cultural Driving Force, Merit for Creative Effectiveness, and Bronze for Brand-Side/In-House, this initiative continues to cultivate awareness and the right vocabulary to address the LGBTQIA+ community across India.

We’re beyond grateful to our brilliant collaborators, the amazing cast, crew, and partners who made this possible:

A bit late with the news, but the joy still feels fresh. Check out the campaign at https://wordsofpride.disneystar.com

Here’s to holding on to hope even when it’s hard.

Meet .damarsetti (they/them)
Senior Consultant with a software company.

“When I told my mom that I’m gay, she understood what it meant,” Karthik shared. “But I couldn’t explain my non-binary identity to anyone in my native tongue.” Living with spastic diplegia in a multicultural household fluent in Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu, Karthik finds traditional gender politics exclusionary. They still couldn’t find the words to capture their q***rness. The lack of vocabulary became even more apparent during the 2018 judgement decriminalising Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. “Watching the news with my family, I realised I couldn’t explain the different identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. The words just didn’t exist in our everyday language.”

Tamil words for transgender people like Thirunar or Thirunangai are common, but Karthik notes, “If I were to shift to another language, that’s when it would all fall apart.” In Telugu, the challenge is even greater. The word q***r in Tamil and Telugu hasn’t been defined, often borrowed from English, making it hard to explain to their family what it even entails. Karthik’s self-awareness deepened during their master’s studies in the US, but language struggles continued at home. The lack of representation in regional media reinforced harmful stereotypes and hindered meaningful discourse.

In their 30s now, Karthik works in Hyderabad as a senior developer with a leading software consultancy firm. “We need more gender-neutral words in our languages, so people can use them without fear of being outed. It’s about reclaiming our identities without borrowing from non-Indian terms.” Initiatives like Words of Pride highlight the importance of community-driven language. “Only we know what to call ourselves. Words are powerful, and we need to build the language we need as a community.”
