ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस मेले में मध्य एशिया से पशुओं की खरीदारी करने कारोबारी आया करते थे और यह मेला जंगी हाथियों का सबसे बड़ा केंद्र था। मौर्य वंश के संस्थापक चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य, मुगल सम्राट अकबर और 1857 के गदर के नायक वीर कुंवर सिंह ने भी सोनपुर मेले से हाथियों की खरीद की थी।
