Long before “strong” female characters became a staple in Bollywood, Nargis was choosing unconventional roles, where her characters questioned systems of power and chose to speak uncomfortable truths.

The emotional honesty and openness that feels like a staple in her writing and everyday life carried on to her films as well. Her emotions and words stayed with us be it onscreen or off it. So on the 97th birth anniversary of the iconic Nargis Dutt, we are revisiting some of her words that feel startlingly relevant.

Which quote hit you the hardest?

FWICE wasn’t created by one celebrity or filmmaker. It was formed in 1956 when multiple film workers’ unions in Bombay came together to create a collective voice for the entertainment workforce.

Today, the federation operates as the “mother body” for several craft associations across films, television, ads, digital content, and event productions. And honestly, it makes sense why an organization like this exists. Every film set runs on hundreds of workers handling lighting, costumes, sound, transport, editing, production support, set construction, scheduling, safety, and more. Without them, filmmaking simply stops.

Over the years, FWICE has stepped into conversations around unpaid dues, delayed salaries, unsafe working conditions, insurance support, contract disputes, and worker welfare inside an industry that often runs on extreme deadlines and pressure.

The Ranveer Singh controversy has suddenly put FWICE into mainstream conversation, but its influence in Bollywood has existed for decades.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this controversy? Comment below and follow Civic Studios for more such film industry facts.

“Ek taraf hai gharwali, ek taraf baharwali. Sweet sweet gharwali, hot hot baharwali.”

👆Gharwali Baharwali (1998) really said this out loud… and somehow Bollywood kept running with the joke for decades after that.

From Pati Patni Aur Woh to Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, the “cheating husband caught in chaos” trope keeps getting repackaged as harmless comedy. The man lies, manipulates, and fumbles his way through relationships, while the audience is expected to laugh along!

And the most telling part is the reactions would probably look very different if women were centred in these stories the same way (remember the hate towards Rani Mukerji’s character in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna?).

Maybe the issue isn’t just the trope surviving. It’s how normalised it still feels.

Maybe the reason you feel uncomfortable right now is because life is trying to pull you out of the version of yourself you’ve outgrown.

You keep waiting to feel ready. Confident. Certain. But growth doesn’t happen when everything feels safe. It happens when you do the thing you thought you couldn’t.

At some point, you have to stop shrinking yourself to match your fears. You’re capable of a lot more than the life you keep postponing.

THIS IS YOUR SIGN.

What makes an international co-production truly work beyond funding?

At India Week Film Conclave 2026, our Director of Impact & Partnerships at Civic Studios, Namrata Sharma was on the panel for The UK as a world-class filming destination: Co-production treaties and policies along with Michelle Jenkins (Head of Production Services, Film London) and Anna Mansi (Head of Certification, BFI) which was moderated by Lee Stone (Partner in Lee and Thompson’s Film Group).

Industry leaders explored how the UK and India can build stronger creative collaborations through the right partnerships, early engagement with film bodies, and stories that genuinely benefit from cross-border collaboration.

From funding systems and production incentives to trust, documentation and creative alignment, the conversation unpacked what it really takes to navigate global filmmaking today.

Cinema has always reflected society’s discomforts, and menstruation has long been one of them.

From blue-liquid ads and whispered euphemisms (“it’s that time of the month”🙄) to films and shows finally depicting periods with honesty, vulnerability, humour, and empathy, storytelling around menstruation has slowly evolved.

But as reactions to certain scenes still prove, the stigma hasn’t disappeared yet.

This , here’s hoping for more stories that inform instead of shame, and portray periods as a normal part of life, not something dramatic.

What’s a film or TV show that you think depicted menstruation well (or terribly)? Tell us in the comments!

“Maybe one day I’ll get a chance to do something good for somebody”
— said Larry David in the final episode of season 3 of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

And somehow, in season 4, he actually did it (behind the scenes) by saving Juan Catalan’s life.

In the episode titled, “The Carpool Lane,” Larry David attends a Dodgers baseball game. Sounds normal, right?
But what Larry and his team didn’t know then was that THIS VERY EPISODE would later help save a Juan Catalan from DEATH ROW.

Jacob LaMendola’s 2017 documentary ‘Long Shot’ tells the unbelievable true story of how one episode built on awkward coincidences and silly arguments ended up saving someone’s life.

BTW, it’s so ironic that in that same episode, there’s a plot point of a character being arrested for something he didn’t do (similar to what happened to Juan IRL)

Anyway, did you enjoy this wild story? For more such pop culture tidbits, follow Civic Studios!

Indian summers make most of us long for rain, and if you’re someone who loves cinema, monsoon feels even more cinematic.

Mainstream films often use rain to evoke romance or heartbreak. Wet saris, choreographed songs, longing eyes, and walking across the city as the rain pours, these are aesthetics that the audience is familiar with.

So if the skies are finally turning grey where you are, here are some films worth revisiting with a small cup of chai, and the windows open.

Which film do you rewatch in the monsoons? Tell us in the comments!

Swipe to see the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Report of 2024 that was released on 6th May this year.

The recent deaths of Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar have once again forced the country to confront the horrifying reality of dowry-related violence. According to NCRB data, India recorded 5,737 dowry deaths in 2024. That’s more than 15 women dying every single day because marriage is still treated like a financial transaction.

While the numbers have declined compared to a decade ago, the problem is far from over. Over 1.20 lakh cases of cruelty by husbands and relatives were reported in 2024 alone, showing how deeply normalised harassment, abuse, and coercion continue to be inside Indian homes.

And these are only the reported cases. How many women stay silent because they’re told to “adjust”? How many families still disguise extortion as tradition? How many people witness dowry demands and choose not to speak up?

It’s high time we stop treating dowry as culture and start calling it what it really is: Violence! What are your thoughts? Share them below!

Are celebs constantly expected to perform for the cameras?

With Justin Bieber saying that he was “standing on business,” he tried to remind the paparazzi that he is also “human” as they surrounded him and his car by the beach. Justin was trying to set a boundary, and reminding people he too has the right to privacy.

Recently, Salman Khan lashed out at paparazzi outside a hospital after they gathered near the premises yelled questions about his upcoming film as he visited someone. He then went on to post about the incident on his Instagram, explaining moments of emergency and grief aren’t opportunities to create content.

And then there’s Jaya Bachchan, who is very often reduced to “angry, hysterical woman” memes. But underneath her frustration with the paps also lies something deeper, in an interview she explained that she draws a line between journalism and paparazzi culture,

“My relationship with the media is fantastic. I am a product of the media. My father was a journalist, and I have immense respect for them. But my relationship with paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country?”

Paparazzi are part of the entertainment ecosystem, but given the influx of content, the lines between entertainment and intrusion and being blurred. Pap culture runs on our obsession with celebrity access. Airport looks, gym exits, coffee runs, “candid” sightings, almost everything about a famous person’s life is content left for people to consume. While fame and celebrity comes with attention, one also has the right to privacy.

Celebrities benefit from visibility, but that still doesn’t mean every boundary disappears. People can be public figures, they aren’t public property! And audiences play a role in this too… the demand for these videos exists because of our engagement with them.
