An Invitation to Reimagine Storytelling!

This Saturday, Film Karigar is inviting filmmakers, writers, storytellers, technicians, students, and anyone who cares about cinema to join us for an open online conversation.

We want to ask a difficult but necessary question:

Can we reimagine a better way of storytelling around the changing and, in many ways, dying Hindi film industry?

We don't want this conversation to become another exercise in criticism. As an independent production house, we believe that if a system is broken, pointing out what is wrong cannot be our only responsibility.

We must also come together to imagine what can be rebuilt.

During the meetup, we would like to hear your ideas, experiences and possible solutions about storytelling, production, collaboration, audiences, new models of filmmaking, and how we can rebuild a healthier creative community.

Following the discussion, Film Karigar would like to draft an Open Letter to the major production houses and stakeholders of the Hindi film industry, bringing together the collective thoughts and recommendations that emerge from this conversation.

This is not an attempt to attack an industry. It is an attempt to start a conversation about saving, rebuilding and reimagining it. If you have something to say, an idea to share, or simply want to listen and participate, join us this Saturday.

Let's move beyond criticism. Let's imagine what comes next.

Filmmaking is perhaps the only profession that grants you permission to excavate the inner worlds of practitioners across every conceivable domain.

The profession demands an intellectual curiosity as a prerequisite. You cannot authentically tell stories across human experience without understanding the texture of different lives. Each project becomes an intensive apprenticeship in another person's expertise and perspective. Over a career spanning multiple films and genres, a filmmaker accumulates a layered, multidisciplinary understanding of the world that few other professions systematically cultivate.

The three screen grabs from a recent impact cm awareness film for Kolotan school from Bengal is one such exposure. A short video on how the teachers and the parents are coming coming together support the school in many ways possible.

The initiative by the school is called 'Sumangali', which was created by adding the Sanskrit prefix Su-' (meaning good, auspicious, or well) to the word Mangali', a term that had become heavily stigmatized and weaponized against marginalized women in South Indian caste hierarchies.

The formation represents linguistic and social reclamation, rather than accepting the degraded, derogatory connotations that 'Mangali' had accumulated through centuries of systemic oppression, the prefix 'Su-' was added to reframe and elevate the term. This transforms 'Mangali' (which, despite having legitimate occupational and community meanings, had been weaponized as a slur) into Sumangali', positioning these women as auspicious, dignified, and worthy of respect.

Shooting a classroom for a documentary is as much about patience and common sense as it is about camera skills. The challenge is to be present without becoming the center of attention. Before filming begins, it helps to arrive early, introduce yourself briefly, and then step back so the students can get used to your presence. Once the class starts, avoid unnecessary movement, conversations, or equipment adjustments that might distract attention from the lesson. Instead of constantly searching for shots, find a good position, observe carefully, and wait for moments to unfold naturally. Using a longer lens and keeping camera movements to a minimum can help the crew remain unobtrusive.

As a film crew, it is important to remember that the classroom belongs to the teacher and the students, not to the camera. Respect the flow of the lesson, avoid blocking line of sight, keep phones silent, and never interrupt an activity just because a shot was missed. Good classroom filming comes from learning to anticipate moments rather than chasing them. The more quietly and respectfully the crew works, the sooner people forget the camera is there, and that is when the most honest interactions, emotions, and learning experiences begin to appear on screen.

Our newsletter is out!

In this month’s issue, we have largely covered the story behind the making of our recent documentary film, Loksadhana. We share team testimonials and reflections on their experiences throughout the journey. We also discuss the ethics of consent while building a story, an important principle that we practice and encourage all our followers to uphold.

We are excited to share the launch of our new initiative, Inside Education. The issue also revisits the long-term impact story of our 2022 documentary film, David and His Neel Bagh. Meanwhile, our young Karigar from Bengal shares her experience of Basalt Utsav at her school. We also include a few tips on using and mixing sound effects effectively.
