Global accounting and advisory firm Ernst & Young ( EY ) India has released a statement following the tragic demise of 26-year-old Chartered Accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, who allegedly succumbed to extreme work pressure at the company’s Pune office.

“We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing in July 2024, and our deepest condolences go to the bereaved family,” EY India stated on Wednesday. “While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all the assistance as we always do in such times of distress and will continue to do so.”

Anna had joined EY’s audit team at S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, on March 18, 2024. In just four months, her promising career was cut short. “That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us,” the company added. The matter gained public attention after Anna’s mother sent a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, criticising what she described as the “glorification” of overwork at the multinational firm. She claimed that her daughter was subjected to excessive workloads, often working late into the night and on weekends. According to the letter, Anna would return to her accommodation completely exhausted, burdened with “backbreaking work” despite being a newcomer.

Billionaire Gautam Adani's group has acquired a majority stake in news agency IANS India Pvt Ltd for an undisclosed sum as the group expands its presence in the media space.
In a regulatory filing, Adani Enterprises -- the firm that holds the group's media interest -- said its subsidiary "AMG Media Networks Ltd has acquired a 50.50 per cent stake constituting equity shares of IANS India Pvt Ltd." The company did not disclose the acquisition price.
Adani had forayed into media business in March last year when it acquired Quintillion Business Media, which operates business and financial news digital media platform BQ Prime. It thereafter in December took nearly 65 per cent stake in broadcaster NDTV.
AMNL was the vehicle for these acquisitions as well.
In the filing, it said, "AMNL has also signed a shareholders' agreement with IANS and Sandeep Bamzai, a shareholder of IANS, to record their inter-se rights with respect to IANS." IANS had a revenue of Rs 11.86 crore in the fiscal year 2022-23 (April 2022 to March 2023).
"All operational and management control of IANS will be with AMNL and AMNL will have the right to appoint all directors of IANS," the filing said.
"Pursuant to the acquisition as set out above, IANS is now a subsidiary of AMNL." A first-generation entrepreneur, Adani started off as a commodities trader in 1988 and expanded his business interests to become India's largest private player in infrastructure, with 13 ports and eight airports. Over the years it diversified into producing coal, energy distribution, data centres and more recently into cement and copper. It even bid and acquired 5G telecom spectrum to set up a private network.

🏏 BCCI retires the iconic No. 7 jersey of MS Dhoni, following in the footsteps of honoring legends like Sachin Tendulkar's No. 10. Recognizing their monumental contributions to cricket, BCCI restricts these numbers for new players, preserving their legacy. 🌟

Previously, the BCCI honored Sachin Tendulkar by retiring his No. 10 jersey in 2017. The act of retiring jerseys is a common practice in sports, acknowledging the exceptional contributions of revered players. The BCCI has notified the national team, especially new players, about the unavailability of numbers 7 and 10, previously worn by Dhoni and Tendulkar respectively. A senior BCCI official mentioned that new players are not allowed to select these numbers to maintain the legacy of these cricketing icons.

The confrontation between the government and the agitating farmers seeking enhancement in sugarcane prices has ended, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Friday after meeting farmer union leaders in Chandigarh. The railway track in Jalandhar has been cleared and the main highway will also be cleared, he added.

“A solution has been reached. We will make the announcement after holding meetings with other stakeholders. We specifically talked about disrupting rail and road traffic. All unions have agreed that people will not be made to suffer because of protests. The farmers will get good news in the coming days. I am not announcing it today. The government will announce it soon,” Mann said, addressing the media.

Earlier this week, hundreds of farmers had blocked the Jalandhar-New Delhi National Highway to press the government for a hike in sugarcane assured price from Rs 380 to Rs 450 per quintal. The blockade had triggered massive traffic jams.

“Ambulances were stuck in traffic. People were stuck on roads for four hours. They had to take detours through the villages to reach their destinations,” Mann pointed out.

On whether the government had buckled under the pressure of unions, Mann said, “There was no credit war. It was not a war. They have promised that the dharnas would be lifted. In future, such a situation would not arise that the trend of harassing people will be allowed to continue.”

Lorho S. Pfoze, an MP from Manipur, wanted to discuss the violence and conflict in his region during a debate on a no-confidence motion in the Parliament. However, he was advised by his friends in the BJP not to speak on the issue, as the Home Minister Amit Shah was already planning to address it. Pfoze represents areas greatly affected by the ongoing ethnic conflict and wanted to assure his constituents and all of India that the government is committed to restoring peace. He believes that MPs from Manipur should have been given the opportunity to speak, which would have shown the people that the government is taking their concerns seriously. Another Manipur MP, R.K. Ranjan Singh, was also advised not to speak. Gaurav Gogoi, who initiated the no-confidence motion, expressed frustration that despite discussing Manipur in Parliament, the BJP did not allow the Manipur MPs to speak, indicating a lack of sensitivity and patience from Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

An Affiliated Entity with Mukesh Ambani Successfully Sells Lavish Dwelling at 400 W. 12th St., Commonly Known as Superior Ink, for ₹ 74 crores.

A remarkable condo, occupying an impressive 2,406 square feet, finds its place on the fourth floor.

Meticulously curated, the residence showcases two bedrooms that have been ingeniously reimagined from three, coupled with 3½ baths.

The Hudson River unfolds in all its splendour from its panoramic vantage point, a standout feature. Inside, the residence boasts refined elements, including 10-foot-high ceilings exuding opulence, herringbone-patterned hardwood floors oozing elegance, and soundproof windows guaranteeing serenity. A chef's kitchen stands as a culinary aficionado's haven, tailored for gourmet pursuits.

Ambani, the driving force behind Reliance Industries, commands recognition for steering the operations of the monumental Jamnagar Refinery, the world's largest oil refinery.

Significantly, Reliance has prospered by leveraging India's neutral stance amid Russia's conflict with Ukraine. Capitalizing on Western sanctions during this period, Reliance has cleverly secured cost-effective Russian crude oil, processing and distributing it lucratively to global destinations such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States.

The towering 17-story edifice of Superior Ink had its genesis as the Superior Ink Factory, dating back to 1919. Reflecting timeless architectural prowess, the building underwent a metamorphosis in 2009, orchestrated by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, with interiors envisioned by Yabu Pushelberg.
