With the ECOWAS’ deadline for reinstating Niger President Mohamed Bazoum ending on Aug 6, all eyes are on the next move by West African members of the bloc. Last week, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) vowed military action to end the coup in Niger if the takeover leaders failed to free the detained president by Aug 6. By the morning of Aug 7, no sign of intervention by ECOWAS’ troops in Niger was apparent and President Bazoum remained detained. Meanwhile, Niger’s coup leaders closed the country’s airspace as the bloc’s deadline expired and fear of a military intervention rose. Why has ECOWAS not initiated military action against Niger’s coup? Is the bloc divided over how to tackle the takeover in Niger?

Schoolchildren & school authorities protested in the streets of Cite Soleil neighbourhood in capital Port au Prince, after American nurse Alix Dorsainvil & her young child were kidnapped from the premises of her charity, in an event that has become common in Haiti.

Dorsainvil worked for the El Roi Haiti organisation, which runs a school and clinic.

Those taking to the streets appealed for the release of the woman who they say had given so much to their community. Watch!

Mexico on August 3rd announced that they had discovered the bodies of two people in the Rio Grande River on its border with the US. One of the bodies was stuck in a group floating barrier wrapped in razor wire. These deadly buoys were installed by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott to stop people from crossing into the US. The discovery of the two has highlighted the dangers associated with Texas’ controversial anti-migrant policy. What are these floating fences and why are they problematic? Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Aug 2 launched massive military exercises off the coast of Abu Musa island one of three Gulf islands under Iranian control but disputed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exercises were conducted amid rising tensions between Iran and the US over America’s increasing military presence in the Gulf. During the unannounced drills, the IRGC navy unveiled new vessels equipped with 600-km range missiles. Is this Tehran’s message to Washington to leave the Gulf? Is the Islamic Republic trying to kill two birds – US and UAE - with one stone – military exercises in disputed Gulf islands?

Beijing recorded its heaviest rainfall in at least 140 years between Saturday & Wednesday morning, recording 29.3 inches of rain according to The Beijing Meteorological Bureau.

The torrential rains destroyed roads, knocked out power, and caused at least 21 deaths & left 26 people missing.

In a crackdown on anti-China spies, Beijing has called on its citizens to join counter-espionage work. Beijing’s state security ministry has said the administration must create channels for individuals to report suspicious activity, as per a Reuters report. The ministry also mentioned creating a system for commendation and rewards for citizens who contribute. The remarks were made by the ministry in its first post on its WeChat account, which went live on July 31. Is the appeal aimed at US’ network of spies operating in China which it claims to have ‘rebuilt’ recently? Indigenous communities from northern Argentina held demonstrations in Buenos Aires to claim their lands and natural resources.

The march called the third Malon of La Paz brings together a hundred native communities, echoing the first Malon (or raid), when Indigenous communities marched to Buenos Aires in 1946 to defend their ancestral lands.

The third Malon of La Paz has covered more than 1,800 kilometers on foot and by bus until reaching the Argentine capital to celebrate their traditional day to Mother Earth, which they call Pachamama.

The Swedish government said it will beef up border security in the wake of incidents in which the Islamic holy book was burned or defaced at protests in Sweden and Denmark.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the move could prevent people with “very weak connections” to the Scandinavian country to enter its territory and commit acts hurting Swedish national interests.
