Amarnath Yatra Suspended from Pahalgam, Baltal Due to Inclement Weather

Srinagar, July 30: The annual Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Wednesday from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes as a precautionary measure due to continuous heavy rainfall, officials said.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said that the pilgrimage was halted following incessant downpours since early morning. “Yatra movement has not been allowed from either of the base camps — Baltal and Nunwan (Chandanwari),” he said.

Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, also confirmed that the prevailing weather conditions had severely impacted the movement of pilgrims. “In view of heavy rains in the Yatra area, it has been decided that no convoy shall proceed from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar base camp towards Baltal or Nunwan on July 31,” he said, adding that updates would be shared with pilgrims as the situation evolves.

So far, over 3.93 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the Holy Cave since the Yatra began on July 3.

Div Com Jammu forms Joint Committee to study Birds related hazards at Jammu Airport

JAMMU, JULY 29: Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar today chaired a meeting to discuss measures for preventing birds related hazards at the Jammu Airport.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner JMC; AOC Air force Station Jammu; Vice Chairman JDA; ADDC Jammu; CEO Cantonment Board Jammu and representatives of AAI.

The meeting discussed the issue of Birds hazard originating from surrounding areas of the Jammu Airport. It was informed that the accumulation of garbage and dumping of waste attract the birds that fly over the periphery of the Airport.

The Divisional Commissioner directed the JMC, JDA and CEO Cantonment Board Jammu for implementing a robust garbage disposal mechanism in the areas surrounding the Jammu Airport. He further asked them for issuing prohibitory orders and awareness drives for prevention of garbage dumping that attracts birds.

The Divisional Commissioner also constituted a Committee under ADDC Jammu Sher Singh with members from JDA, JMC, Cantonment Board Jammu, AAI Jammu and Air Force Station Jammu to conduct the field visit and submit a report within a week, suggesting effective measures to prevent the Birds related hazards at the Jammu Airport.

Kupwara lifts IDPL Baseball U-19 Boys championship

KUPWARA, JULY 28: The Inter District Provincial Level (IDPL) Baseball U-19 Boys Championship concluded today at Hakaniabad Sports Stadium, Punzwa, District Kupwara, with Team Kupwara emerging as champions after a remarkable performance in the final match against Team Pulwama.

In the thrilling final, Team Kupwara completed 4 homes, setting a strong target. Team Pulwama needed 5 homes to claim the title but managed to complete only one home during the entire match. With this dominant display, Team Kupwara clinched the prestigious title.

Joint Director Poshan J&K applauds grassroots level implementation

KISHTWAR, JULY 28: In a significant outreach initiative aimed at extending the benefits of welfare schemes to remote areas, a Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) camp was successfully organized here at Chingam village of Poshan Project Inderwal.

  Joint Director Poshan J&K Vinod Behnal attended the camp held on the directions of MD Poshan JK Musheer Ahmed.

The event witnessed the active participation of CDPOs, Supervisors, Anganwadi Workers, Anganwadi Helpers, beneficiaries—including pregnant women and lactating mothers, besides the general public.

A notable number of beneficiaries were enrolled on the spot during. The Joint Director Poshan conducted a detailed tour of the village to supervise the implementation of the PMMVY scheme at the grassroots level. The PMMVY provisions financial assistance of ₹5,000 to the eligible expecting mother for the first live birth and ₹6,000 for the second girl child, to ensure required nutrition for mother and child.

Addressing the gathering, the Joint Director commended the tireless efforts of field-level functionaries, particularly the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, for their commitment and dedication in ensuring the delivery of essential services to the most remote corners.

He also emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening last-mile delivery and ensuring the vision of Poshan Abhiyaan is realized.

The camp highlighted the Department’s commitment to inclusive outreach and reaffirmed its goal of supporting maternal and child health through effective scheme implementation.

DC Poonch reviews arrangements for Independence Day 2025 Celebrations

POONCH, JULY 28, 2025: Deputy Commissioner Poonch Vikas Kundal today chaired a meeting here at Dak Bungalow to review the preparations for the Independence Day 2025 celebrations. The meeting was attended by key district officers and stakeholders to ensure timely, well-coordinated and dignified observance of the national event.

ADC Tahir Mustafa Malik gave a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, outlining departmental responsibilities and the status of preparations.

The Deputy Commissioner took a detailed review of all aspects related to the celebrations including security arrangements, venue decoration and seating plans, Public Address System, cultural programmes and media coverage, parade readiness and Shanai Vadan, fire safety protocols, barricading and traffic management, refreshments and hospitality, power and water supply, illumination of government buildings and cleanliness drives.

Special emphasis was laid on maintaining cleanliness around the venue, ensuring flawless parade rehearsals and a faultless public addressing system during the main event.

The main function is scheduled to be held at Sports Stadium Poonch, where the Chief Guest will unfurl the National Flag and take the salute during a ceremonial march-past by various contingents.

In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Commissioner directed all departments to work in synergy and uphold the spirit of patriotism by ensuring that Independence Day 2025 is celebrated in a grand, smooth and inclusive manner.

Pulwama, July 28: At least 15 students fell unconscious, some experiencing panic attacks, after a chemical reaction occurred during a laboratory experiment at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) in Khrew on Monday.

An official said that the incident took place during a routine chemistry practical when a container of acid reportedly reacted unexpectedly, causing fumes to spread inside the laboratory.

The sudden incident led to chaos, with several students collapsing and others experiencing severe distress and breathing difficulties, the official added.

All affected students were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, with some later referred to SMHS Hospital Srinagar for specialized treatment. Their condition is stated to be stable.

BMO Pampore, Dr. Yusuf, confirmed to JKNS that 15 students had fallen unconscious and were promptly shifted to hospital care. “All of them are stable,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Basharat Qayoom, told JKNS that the incident occurred inside the school laboratory. “A Magistrate and Tehsildar are on site and are verifying the facts,” he added. (JKNS)

Renowned Kashmiri Comedian Bashir Kotur Passes Away

Srinagar, July 28: Celebrated Kashmiri comedian Bashir Kotur passed away on Monday at his residence, a day after being discharged from the hospital.

Family sources told news agency JKNS that Kotur had been battling stomach cancer, liver damage, and gall bladder complications. He had recently been admitted to the ICU in critical condition. Despite his discharge yesterday, his health worsened, leading to his demise earlier today.

Bashir Kotur, known for his sharp wit, cultural satire, and decades-long contribution to Kashmiri entertainment, leaves behind a lasting legacy.
