|| Two persons have been arrested while efforts are on to nab another for allegedly robbing vendors and business establishments across Naharlagun, Papu Nallah, Doimukh, Itanagar and nearby areas using a fake pistol, Naharlagun police said on Friday.
According to Superintendent of Police, Naharlagun, Nyelam Nega, Constable Sanu Raj of Naharlagun Police Station single-handedly apprehended one of the accused. The case is being investigated under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun Rishi Longdo and led by Inspector Krishnendu Dev, Officer-in-Charge of Naharlagun Police Station.
The first incident was reported on September 14 at Nigam Colony, Naharlagun, where two men allegedly robbed ₹20,000 from a wine shop manager after threatening him with a fake pistol before fleeing on a scooter driven by another accomplice.
A day later, a similar incident was reported near a Yamaha dealership at Papu Nallah around 3 pm, where the accused allegedly looted ₹15,000 in cash, a mobile phone, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and a trading licence from a fruit vendor. Another case was registered in connection with the incident.
On the same day, a grocery shop in Doimukh was also targeted using a similar modus operandi.
“Using arms, even fake ones, for committing robberies is a serious crime. Accordingly, I constituted a team and launched an investigation,” SP Nega said.
During the probe, on October 29, Constable Sanu Raj noticed a suspect riding an R15 motorcycle in Yupia and, risking his life, managed to intercept and apprehend him. The accused, identified as Maru Takam (22), confessed to multiple crimes during interrogation.
Based on his disclosure, the police recovered a R15 motorcycle, a Dio scooter used in earlier crimes, a laptop, two LPG cylinders, and a guitar. Following further leads, the second accused, identified as Dayum Tado, was arrested on October 31, while efforts are on to trace the third accomplice.
SP Nega said several theft and robbery cases had earlier been registered against the first accused across different police stations within the Itanagar Capital Region. He was known to operate wearing surgical masks and gloves to avoid identification.
Further investigation is underway to trace the remaining accused and identify any additional accomplices.
