The World Health Organization has reported nearly 500 confirmed Ebola cases in the ongoing Central Africa outbreak, raising fresh concerns about the scale and speed of the epidemic. The majority of cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with infections also reported in neighbouring Uganda.
According to the WHO, the outbreak has resulted in 471 confirmed cases and 84 deaths across the two countries. Health officials say the numbers have risen sharply in recent days, prompting fears that the crisis could expand further without aggressive intervention.
The WHO and Africa CDC have launched a $518-million response plan aimed at strengthening surveillance, testing and infection control measures as authorities work to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
