Your child going to school? These are safety checks every parent should know.

Recent incidents involving children in schools and preschools are a reminder that school safety cannot be taken for granted.

As parents, we should:

• Check in with our child every day and actually listen to what they say.
• Look for unexplained injuries, marks or sudden changes in behaviour.
• Teach children about safe and unsafe touch and that they can always say NO.
• Make sure they know who their trusted adults are.
• Ask the school about CCTV coverage, staff verification, visitor access and pickup/drop-off protocols.
• Never dismiss a child’s complaint or unusual behaviour.
• If something feels wrong, investigate it calmly and take appropriate action immediately.

We don’t need to scare our children. We need to make them aware, confident and safe.
