Lightning is no longer a rare natural phenomenon. Studies show it has emerged as one of India's deadliest weather-related hazards, claiming tens of thousands of lives over the past two decades. Between 2002 and 2022 alone, lightning caused more than 50,000 deaths and accounted for nearly half of all weather-related fatalities in the country.

Scientists increasingly link the rise in lightning activity to climate change. Warmer temperatures, higher atmospheric moisture, and greater instability in the atmosphere create conditions that fuel stronger thunderstorms and more lightning strikes.

But this is not just a climate story, it is a social justice story. Recent reports suggest lightning activity across India has risen sharply in recent years, with new hotspots emerging even in northern and western regions, including areas around Delhi-NCR.

India’s Education System Faces Deep Infrastructure Gaps

A recent report from Niti Aayog has once again highlighted critical challenges within India’s school education system — from the lack of girls’ toilets and electricity to inadequate digital access and teacher shortages across thousands of schools.

Despite improvements in enrolment over the years, infrastructure gaps continue to affect the quality, accessibility, and continuity of education, especially for children in rural and marginalised communities.

Among the major concerns raised:
🔹 Thousands of schools still lack functional toilets for girls
🔹 Over one lakh schools reportedly operate with a single teacher
🔹 Many institutions continue to struggle with electricity, internet access, and science lab facilities
🔹 Secondary-level dropout rates remain a significant challenge

For many students, especially girls, access to safe sanitation, water, electricity, and basic learning facilities directly impacts attendance, dignity, and long-term educational outcomes.

As India focuses on becoming a knowledge-driven economy, strengthening school infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to quality education remains central to building an inclusive future.
