US senators demand hearing over troop strain in Iran war
A group of US senators has demanded a congressional hearing into the toll the war on Iran is taking on American troops, citing severe logistical failures and indefinite deployment extensions across naval ships and regional bases.

The 12 senators, all members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote to committee chairman Roger Wicker requesting a public hearing with Defense Department leadership regarding the “poor planning and mismanagement of extended deployments” and the resulting impact on service personnel

These days, Gaza’s healthcare system is not in the news. There are no violent raids on hospitals, as happened to al-Shifa Hospital, while I was working there in November 2023; there are no bombings of hospital wards or sniper killings in their yards; there are no new claims of secret tunnels under medical facilities.

And yet, Gaza’s medical system continues to suffer from worsening collapse. Perhaps, this is the most apparent in displacement camps, where the most impoverished and vulnerable people are forced to live. There, the devastated healthcare system cannot reach those who need it the most, nor are the ill and injured able to come to its few functioning points.

Oil holds steady as investors monitor US-Iran war and shipping security
Oil prices have stabilised in early trade on Thursday, with Brent crude futures for October delivery gaining 25 cents, or 0.3 percent, to reach $91.87 a barrel as of 00:37 GMT.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for September slipped 2 cents to trade at $85.81 a barrel, while the more active October WTI contract gained 14 cents, or 0.2 percent, to reach $84.53.

The movement came after both Brent and WTI benchmarks gained for a fourth straight session on Wednesday, according to the Reuters news agency, settling at their highest levels since July 24 as investors assessed the outlook for the US-Iran war and the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
