உண்மையில் மொழி என்பது என்ன ? ஒரு சொல்லின் மதிப்பு அதன் பொருளைப் பொருத்ததா அல்லது கேட்பவரின் எதிர்வினையைப் பொருத்ததா ? ஒலிதான் மொழியெனில் மனதுக்குள் பேசுவதெல்லாம் மொழியாகாதா ? பேசுகிறவர்களையும் கேட்கிறவர்களையும் இணைக்கிற கருவிதான் மொழியா ? இசையென்பது மொழியா அல்லது வெறும் ஒலியா ? விலங்குகளின் சப்தங்களும் மொழிதானா ? கடவுள் எங்கிருக்கிறார் ? கடவுள்கள் புரிந்து கொள்ளக் கூடிய மொழி என்று ஒன்று உண்டா ? நமது பிரார்த்தனைகள் என்னும் சொற்கள் எங்கே செல்கின்றன ?

இப்படியான கேள்விகளுக்கு மூன்று பதின்வயது சிறுமிகளின் தேடலின் வழியே தத்துவார்த்தமாக விடை தேட முயலும் புத்தகம்தான் தத்துவவியலாளர் சுந்தர் சருக்கை எழுதிய ‘Following a Prayer’ என்னும் நாவல். இந்நூலை தமிழில் ‘பிரார்த்தனையைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து ; என்ற பெயரில் சீனிவாச ராமாநுஜம் அவர்கள் மொழிபெயர்த்திருக்கிறார் (எதிர் வெளியீடு).

குழந்தைகளின் அறிவை மெச்சுகிற பெரியவர்களின் பெருந்தன்மை என்பது ,அவர்கள் பதில் சொல்லமுடியாத கேள்விகளை எதிர்கொள்ளும் வரை மட்டுமே. இந்தக் கூற்றை மெய்யாக்கும்படி தொடர்ந்து தங்களுடைய கேள்விகளாலும் , தேடலாலும் , குடும்பத்தினரையும் , ஆசிரியர்களையும் துளைத்தெடுக்கிறார்கள். மொழியைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள நிகழ்த்தும் தேடலும், படிப்படியாக உண்மையை நோக்கிய அவர்களின் பயணமும் தத்துவார்த்தமாக எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. மொழியில் தொடங்கி , ஒலிக்கு நகர்ந்து, பின்பு கடவுளைத் தேடி , பின்பு ஒலிக்கும், இசைக்கும், மொழிக்குமான வேறுபாட்டைப் பேசி இறுதியில் நம்மையும் ஒரு சிந்தனைச் சுழலுக்குள் தள்ளுகிறார் எழுத்தாளர். கதையாகப் பார்த்தால் சாதாரணமாகத் தோன்றினாலும் அந்த கதையின் வழி எழுத்தாளர் முன்வைக்கிற தத்துவார்த்தமான கேள்விகளும் அதற்கான பதில்களுமே வாசகர்களுக்கான பெறுமதி என்பது என் கருத்து.

இந்த நூலை வாசிக்கும்போது, ஒரு நாவலை வாசிப்பதைவிட, தன்னுடைய தத்துவச் சிந்தனைகளைப் பாத்திரங்களின் உரையாடல்களாகவும் நிகழ்வுகளாகவும் வடிவமைத்த ஒரு தத்துவவியலாளரின் நீண்ட சிந்தனைக் குறிப்பை வாசிப்பதைப் போன்ற உணர்வே அதிகமாக இருந்தது.
தத்துவங்களை விரும்பி வாசிக்கிறவர்கள் தவறவிடக்கூடாத புத்தகம்.
