Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) Reunites with College Friends After 36 Years at Darjeeling Government College

Darjeeling, Aug 5: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) had an emotional return to Darjeeling Government College, his alma mater, after 36 years. He attended the institution's 78th Foundation Day celebrations.

The visit turned into a memorable reunion as the Chief Minister met with his former classmates and friends, many of whom he had not seen for over three decades. The gathering was filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and nostalgia. Old companions shared stories from their college days and celebrated the friendships that have endured through the years.

Tamang described the reunion as one of the most touching moments of the day. He said reconnecting with his old friends reminded him that while life has taken each of them on different paths, the bonds formed during their student years are still strong and significant. Sikkim High Court Directs Strict No-Parking Enforcement on Atal Setu Bridge
Gangtok, August 4: The Sikkim High Court has ordered authorities in Sikkim and West Bengal to enforce the no-parking rule on the Atal Setu Bridge at Rangpo along National Highway 10 (NH-10) to keep traffic flowing smoothly and ensure public safety.
The Court directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to put up clear signboards on both sides of the bridge informing drivers that parking is not allowed.
Police stationed at Rangpo on both the Sikkim and West Bengal sides have also been instructed to strictly enforce the no-parking rule.
The High Court added that any vehicle parked on the bridge in violation of the order will face penalties and fines according to the law.

Rinchenpong Woman Issues Public Apology, Says Social Media Video Against PHC Doctor Was a Misunderstanding
Rinchenpong, August 3: Jamuna Gurung, a resident of Rinchenpong, has issued a handwritten public statement apologizing for a social media video she posted earlier about an alleged incident involving the Medical Officer In-Charge (MOIC) of Rinchenpong Primary Health Centre (PHC).
In her statement dated August 2, 2026, Gurung explained that she now understands the incident from June 17, 2026, involving her daughter, Prerna Gurung, who works as a pharmacist at Rinchenpong PHC.
She initially shared the video on social media because she believed her daughter had been mistreated by the MOIC, Dr. Priya. However, after learning the full details, she realized that her daughter had left the workplace without permission, which led to a dispute with the MOIC.
Gurung admitted that posting the video disrespected the doctor and acknowledged that the matter was primarily an administrative issue at the health centre. She also stated that during the incident, her son, Mahesh Gurung, had unnecessarily intervened and reportedly used inappropriate language towards the doctor.
Expressing regret over the incident, Gurung said her social media post resulted in the defamation of the doctor. She apologized to all those affected, sought their understanding, and confirmed that she has deleted the video from social media.
The handwritten statement concludes with her appeal for the matter to be treated with respect and for all those involved to move forward peacefully.

IHRC Sikkim Calls for Independent Probe into Singtam Custodial Death

Gangtok, July 31: The International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Sikkim State, has expressed deep concern over the reported custodial death of Purney Darjee at Singtam Police Station, calling for an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident.

In a statement, IHRC State In-charge Robin Rai said the right to life, dignity, and due process is guaranteed under the Constitution of India and protected by both national and international human rights standards. He stated that any allegation of a custodial death warrants the highest level of scrutiny, accountability, and transparency.

The organisation reaffirmed its faith in the rule of law and the justice delivery system while urging the competent authorities to conduct a fair, time-bound investigation in accordance with the law. It said the inquiry should establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is delivered without fear or favour.

IHRC further stated that public confidence in law enforcement institutions depends on adherence to the principles of accountability, fairness, and respect for human rights. According to the organisation, a credible investigation would not only address concerns arising from the custodial death but also strengthen public trust in the administration of justice.

Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the International Human Rights Council extended its heartfelt condolences and said it stands in solidarity with the family in their pursuit of truth and justice through lawful and constitutional means.

The statement was issued by Robin Rai, State In-charge of the International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Sikkim State, in the interest of justice, transparency, and the protection of human rights.

Singtam Custodial D@ath Case: Family Speaks Out as Inquiry Continues; SC Board President Appeals for Justice

Gangtok, July 30: The investigation into the custodial d@ath of 55-year-old Purney Darjee at Singtam Police Station has entered a new phase, with grieving family members and relatives sharing their concerns as authorities continue their inquiry.

Darjee, a resident of Golitar, Singtam, had been detained under the NDPS Act a day before he was found d@ad inside the police lock-up at around 5 AM on Wednesday. Following the incident, three police personnel were suspended pending the outcome of the judicial inquiry and departmental investigation.

Meanwhile, Sikkim Scheduled Caste Board President Shekar Sewa has submitted a representation to the authorities, urging that justice be delivered and that appropriate action be taken against any police personnel found guilty of negligence or misconduct during the investigation.

Speaking on the matter, Sewa said that after reviewing the available CCTV footage from the police station, he is convinced that Darjee took his own life and appealed to the public not to make premature allegations against the police. However, he added that the suspension of the three police personnel is a necessary step to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.

Sewa further stated that if the ongoing inquiry establishes negligence or wrongdoing by any police personnel, the organisation will take a strong stand and seek strict action against those responsible.
