Howrah Bridge is a balanced steel bridge spanning the Hooghly River in the Indian state of West Bengal. Construction of the bridge began in 1943 and was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, as it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location that connected the twin cities of Howrah and Calcutta on opposite banks.

On June 14, 1965, it was renamed Rabindra Setu after the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian and Asian to win the Nobel Prize.

It is still widely known as Howrah Bridge. This bridge is one of his four bridges spanning the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. The other bridges are Vidyasagar Setu (commonly called the Second Hooghly Bridge), Vivekananda Setu and the relatively newer Nivedita Setu.

About 100,000 vehicles and probably more than 150,000 pedestrians cross it every day, making it the busiest cantilever bridge in the world. Howrah Bridge was his third longest cantilevered bridge at the time of its construction and is now his sixth longest of its kind in the world.
