ਸਾਧੋ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਉ ॥
Holy Saadhus: forsake the pride of your mind.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਉ।
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੁਰਜਨ ਕੀ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਾਗਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Sexual desire, anger and the company of evil people - run away from them, day and night. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ (ਭੀ) ਭੈੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ (ਵਾਂਗ ਹੀ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ (ਭੀ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪਰੇ ਰਹੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੋਨੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥
One who knows that pain and pleasure are both the same, and honor and dishonor as well,
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸੁਖ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਦਰ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਗਿ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
who remains detached from joy and sorrow, realizes the true essence in the world. ||1||
(ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ), ਤੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਘਬਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੋਊ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਖੋਜੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਨਾ ॥
Renounce both praise and blame; seek instead the state of Nirvaanaa.
(ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਲੱਭ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ) ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਕਠਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੧॥
O servant Nanak, this is such a difficult game; only a few Gurmukhs understand it! ||2||1||
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-) ਖੇਡ (ਖੇਡਣੀ) ਔਖੀ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥

ਸਹਜ ਅਵਲਿ ਧੂੜਿ ਮਣੀ ਗਾਡੀ ਚਾਲਤੀ ॥
Slowly at first, the body-cart loaded with dust starts to move.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਅੱਗੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਮੈਲੇ ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਗੱਡੀ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਤੁਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੀਛੈ ਤਿਨਕਾ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਂਕਤੀ ॥੧॥
Later, it is driven on by the stick. ||1||
ਅਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ (ਧੋਬਣ) ਸੋਟੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਹਿੱਕਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ; (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਹ ਆਲਸੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ 'ਲਾਡੁਲੀ' ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਜੈਸੇ ਪਨਕਤ ਥ੍ਰੂਟਿਟਿ ਹਾਂਕਤੀ ॥
The body moves along like the ball of dung, driven on by the dung-beetle.
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਧੋਬਣ) (ਉਸ ਗੱਡੀ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਘਾਟ ਵਲ 'ਥ੍ਰੂਟਿਟਿ' ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਹਿੱਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਿ ਧੋਵਨ ਚਾਲੀ ਲਾਡੁਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
The beloved soul goes down to the pool to wash itself clean. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਸਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਧੋਬੀ ਦੀ) ਲਾਡਲੀ (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) (ਕੱਪੜੇ) ਧੋਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਣ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਸਤਸੰਗ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਧੋਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਧੋਬੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਿਰਹ ਬਿਰਾਤਾ ॥
The washerman washes, imbued with the Lord's Love.
ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਧੋਬੀ (-ਗੁਰੂ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਤੇ ਆਈਆਂ ਜਗਿਆਸੂ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
My mind is imbued with the Lord's Lotus Feet. ||2||
(ਉਸੇ ਗੁਰੂ-ਧੋਬੀ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਭੀ) ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਰਮਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
Prays Naam Dayv, O Lord, You are All-pervading.
ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ,
ਅਪਨੇ ਭਗਤ ਪਰ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ॥੩॥੩॥
Please be kind to Your devotee. ||3||3||
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥੩॥

ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰੵਉ ॥
The All-powerful Guru placed His hand upon my head.
ਸਮਰੱਥ ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਅਉ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਰੰਨ ਅਘੰਨ ਹਰੵਉ ॥
The Guru was kind, and blessed me with the Lord's Name. Gazing upon His Feet, my sins were dispelled.
ਜਿਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ;
ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸੁ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨੇ ਸੁਤੁ ਭਾਨ ਡਰੵਉ ॥
Night and day, the Guru meditates on the One Lord; hearing His Name, the Messenger of Death is scared away.
(ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦਾ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਇੱਕ-ਰਸ ਧਿਆਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਜਮ-ਰਾਜ (ਭੀ) ਡਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ)।
ਭਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਸੁ ਆਸ ਜਗਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਕਰੵਉ ॥
So speaks the Lord's slave: Guru Raam Daas placed His Faith in Guru Amar Daas, the Guru of the World; touching the Philosopher's Stone, He was transformed into the Philosopher's Stone.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ (ਨਲ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਕਵੀ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ, ਪਾਰਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਪਰਸਨ-ਜੋਗ (ਪਾਰਸ ਹੀ) ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਯਉ ਸਮਰਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰੵਉ ॥੭॥੧੧॥
Guru Raam Daas recognized the Lord as True; the All-powerful Guru placed His hand upon His head. ||7||11||
ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਟੱਲ ਕਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸਮਰੱਥ ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ) ਨੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ" ॥੭॥੧੧॥
