Ajay Chaturvedi's new book!

Dear All

Finally, its here! A lot of you have heard excuses, for me not making it to events or meetings, with this as the reason. For a first time writer, the publishing industry can be intimidating and rather slow. It was a year-long trek, but worth it. Every step of the way!

The book started to explode in my head, back in 2008. That is when I had come back from the Himalayas, from my first long stay. Since then, everywhere I went, whatever I did, these reflections, kept me awake. I started HarVa as a result in 2010. It has been an incredible journey since then. And one fine day in Aug 2014, I decided to pen down these thoughts. Seven days later, I had a book. A dozen odd publisher rejections and a year later, here we are.

And none too soon!

I have been lucky to have some very generous close friends who burnt the midnight oil with me at various stages of this book.

Deepest gratitude to all. You are in my thoughts. Forever indebted!

Best,
Ajay

Kashmiri pulao on Sundays even though no such dish exists
Zero attendance didn’t mean empty classrooms but the students attended for love of the subject (I probably wasn’t one of them)
Life long relationships with the most awesome alumni as diverse as movie directors to investment bankers, industrialists to entrepreneurs, professors to politicians and more

"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation."

- Thomas Macaulay on India in 1833

Macaulayism is the conscious policy of liquidating indigenous culture through the planned substitution of the alien culture of a colonizing power via the education system. The term is derived from the name of British politician Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859), an individual who was instrumenta...
