The Shree Saunsthan Mahalaxmi Temple is a historically profound and deeply revered shrine in Goa, originally rooted in Colva and Talaulim before its relocation to Bandora in 1565. During the 16th-century Portuguese rule, devotees smuggled the sacred idol out of Colva under the cover of night, temporarily hiding it in Talaulim—where the deity’s historic footprints are still worshipped today—before establishing its permanent home in Bandora. Uniquely, the temple houses two distinct idols of Goddess Mahalaxmi standing side-by-side, alongside small shrines dedicated to Safto and Fato, the brave local heroes who risked their lives to rescue the original deity. Built in elegant Konkani architectural style with a grand assembly hall and spectacular wooden carvings, the temple serves as a vibrant spiritual hub, drawing thousands of pilgrims every year, especially during its spectacular chariot processions for Ramnavami and Mahashivratri.
