Interesting to see the discussion around apples in South India. Recently, Red Leaf was also approached by a prospective farmer from Kavunji, Tamil Nadu - a unique high-altitude microclimate in the Kodaikanal hills exploring low-chill apple cultivation.

Yes, apples can grow in such regions. But growing apples and building a commercially viable premium apple industry are two very different things.

Kashmir’s apple ecosystem is backed by nature itself - higher chilling hours, superior colour development, better sugar accumulation, ideal climate, and decades of horticultural expertise. These advantages cannot be replicated overnight.

Regions like Kavunji may create successful niche or localized production using low-chill varieties, which is a positive sign for Indian horticulture. But the scale, consistency and premium quality associated with Himalayan apples remain in a league of their own.

Innovation in horticulture should be welcomed - not feared.
