In Indian mythology, the serpent-woman, often referred to as a Nāgin or Nāgini, plays a significant role in various stories and legends. Nāgins are mystical, shape-shifting serpents, usually associated with power, wisdom, and mystery. They are said to dwell in the subterranean world known as Pātāla and often have interactions with humans, gods, and demons. Here's a famous story involving a serpent woman:
---
The Tale of Ulupi and Arjuna
Ulupi was a Nāgini, a serpent princess, and one of the wives of the great Pandava prince Arjuna from the Mahabharata.
After being exiled for breaking an agreement with his elder brother, Yudhishthira, Arjuna traveled across India. During this time, he reached the Ganga River, where Ulupi saw him and fell in love. She emerged from the water, using her mystic powers, and carried Arjuna into the underwater palace of the Nāgas.
Ulupi confessed her love for Arjuna and requested him to marry her. Initially reluctant, Arjuna agreed, honoring her devotion and hospitality. They spent a night together, and Ulupi later blessed Arjuna with a boon that made him invincible in water battles.
Though their time together was brief, Ulupi played a significant role later in the Mahabharata. She revived Arjuna's grandson, Pariksh*t, who was killed by a serpent’s curse. This act of kindness showcased her wisdom and selflessness.

Symbolism of Nāgins in Indian Mythology
Nāgins are often seen as symbols of fertility, protection, and transformation. They are both feared and revered, capable of immense love and wrath. They are deeply connected to water bodies, as rivers, lakes, and oceans are believed to be their realms.
