What if an island suddenly appeared where there was only open ocean the day before? In 1963, an underwater volcanic eruption near Iceland created Surtsey, one of the youngest islands on Earth and one of the greatest natural experiments in history.
As lava and volcanic ash rose above the Atlantic Ocean, a brand-new island was born. At first, Surtsey was nothing more than hot black volcanic rock. But over the years, nature slowly transformed it. Wind carried seeds, ocean currents delivered driftwood, and seabirds brought nutrients that allowed mosses, grasses, wildflowers, insects, and other life to establish themselves.
Today, Surtsey is a strictly protected UNESCO World Heritage Site where only a small number of scientists are allowed to visit. This protection allows researchers to study how ecosystems naturally develop on brand-new land without human interference.
From explosive volcanic eruptions to the remarkable arrival of life, Surtsey reminds us that Earth is still creating new landscapes.
