GMC Jammu Trains Doctors in Newborn Resuscitation

BNRP-FGM workshop equips 40 doctors with life-saving neonatal care skills

Jammu, June 12
The Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) City Branch Jammu, organized a Basic Neonatal Resuscitation Programme–First Golden Minute (BNRP-FGM) workshop at SMGS Hospital to strengthen neonatal care and improve newborn survival outcomes.

The workshop brought together 40 doctors, including postgraduate students and senior residents from the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, for intensive training in the latest neonatal resuscitation techniques and emergency response protocols.

Dr. Sanjeev K. Digra, Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics, GMC Jammu, President, IAP City Branch Jammu, and State Academic Coordinator for BNRP-FGM, emphasized the importance of timely neonatal resuscitation in reducing newborn morbidity and mortality. He noted that nearly 10 percent of newborns require assistance to initiate breathing at birth, while most can be effectively managed through basic resuscitation measures.

The training was conducted by a team of certified instructors comprising Dr. Sanjeev K. Digra, Dr. Virender Singh Bhau, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, Dr. Pooja Kawte and Dr. Ajay Chowdhary. Participants received hands-on training designed to enhance their preparedness in handling neonatal emergencies during childbirth.

Faculty members also stressed the importance of adopting standardized resuscitation protocols and evidence-based practices to ensure better healthcare outcomes for newborns.

The programme concluded with an assessment of participants' knowledge and practical skills, followed by the distribution of certificates by Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, Dr. Dara Singh, and Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dr. Rubina Mirza.

The workshop reflected GMC Jammu's continued commitment to strengthening healthcare capacity and ensuring quality neonatal care across the region.
