Sunil Chhetri initially retired from international football in June 2024 but reversed his decision in March 2025 to play for the Indian national team in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. His return was requested by the team's head coach, Manolo Marquez, due to a lack of confidence in other young strikers and India's poor performance after his initial retirement. Chhetri's retirement was due to mental rather than physical reasons, and he continues to play well for his club, Bengaluru FC.
