Dr. Rajagopalan Vasudevan, a retired chemistry professor from Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, revolutionized road construction by developing an innovative method to incorporate plastic waste into road building.

In 2002, he introduced a technique where shredded plastic waste is mixed with bitumen and used in road construction. This approach not only addresses the growing issue of plastic waste but also enhances the durability and cost-effectiveness of roads.

Since the adoption of this method, India has constructed over 100,000 kilometers of roads using plastic waste, with at least 11 states implementing this technology. The roads built with this method have shown increased resistance to damage from heavy rains and reduced maintenance needs. This innovative approach has significantly contributed to both environmental sustainability and infrastructure development.

Dr. Vasudevan's groundbreaking work in waste management and road construction earned him the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2018. His dedication exemplifies how scientific innovation can lead to sustainable solutions for pressing environmental challenges.
