Nepal’s Poultry Industry in Crisis as 236 Hatcheries Shut Down

Nepal’s poultry sector is in turmoil, with 236 hatcheries closing due to prolonged financial distress since the Covid pandemic. Chick prices remained below production costs for years, forcing many out of business.

The number of broiler hatcheries has declined from 348 to 120, while layer hatcheries have dropped from 14 to six. Weekly broiler chick production has fallen from 5.5 million to 3 million, and layer chick output has declined from 250,000 to 130,000.

Despite recent price hikes, hatcheries struggled for years without covering costs. Many survivors rely on bank loans, battling high feed and medicine costs, rising interest rates, and cheap illegal imports from India.

With a single hatchery requiring Rs 400 million to operate and parent chick imports costing Rs 700 each, financial burdens have escalated. Industry leaders urge immediate government intervention to stabilize prices, regulate imports, and support struggling hatcheries.
