নটিংহ্যাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গবেষকেরা প্রাচীন ইংরেজি চিকিৎসাগ্রন্থ Bald’s Leechbook অনুসরণ করে এক হাজার বছর পুরনো ওষুধ Bald’s Eye Salve তৈরি করেছেন। রসুন, অন্য একটি অলিয়াম (পেঁয়াজ বা লিক), পুরাতন ওয়াইন ও গরুর পিত্তরস—এই উপাদানগুলি পিতলের পাত্রে নয় দিন ধরে রেখে তৈরি হয় এই ওষুধ। গবেষণাগারে পরীক্ষা করে দেখা যায়, এটি মারাত্মক এমআরএসএ জীবাণু প্রায় ৯০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত ধ্বংস করতে সক্ষম। ইঁদুরের শরীরে ক্ষত নিরাময়ে এই ওষুধ আধুনিক অ্যান্টিবায়োটিকের সমতুল্য—কিংবা তার থেকেও বেশি কার্যকর। বিজ্ঞানীরা অনুমান করছেন, এটি ব্যাকটেরিয়ার কোয়োরাম সেন্সিং প্রক্রিয়া ব্যাহত করে সংক্রমণ রোধ করে।

"মুসলমানদের ইরান অভিযানের সময় পশ্চিম ইরানের অধিবাসী পার্সিরা প্রাণ এবং ধর্ম বাঁচাতে দলে দলে দেশ ছেড়ে ভারতের গুজরাতে এসে উপস্থিত হন। এই অবস্থা চলে অষ্টম শতক থেকে দশম শতক পর্যন্ত। কিছু সূত্র অনুযায়ী, পার্সিরা প্রথমে দিউতে এসে উপস্থিত হন। সেখানে বেশ কয়েকবছর বসবাসের পরে গুজরাতের রাজা যাদব রানার কাছে আশ্রয় চান তাঁরা। যাদব রানা দুধের এক ভর্তি পাত্র নিয়ে এসে পারসিদের বোঝান যে তাঁর রাজ্যে স্থান সংকুলান। অবস্থা দেখে এক পার্সি পুরোহিত এগিয়ে এসে দুধের মধ্যে এক মুঠো চিনি ফেলে দেন। বাধ্য হয়ে রাজা নিজের রাজ্যে আশ্রয় দেন শরণাগতদের। দুধে চিনি ঢেলে পুরোহিত যে ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিলেন তা কিন্তু সত্যি হলো একেবারেই। আক্ষরিক অর্থে দুধের মধ্যে চিনির মতো নিজেদের সংস্কৃতি, শিক্ষা, ধর্মাচারণ নিয়ে পার্সিরা মিশে গেলেন এদেশের জনস্রোতে। পার্সি এবং ইরানিদের খাদ্যাভ্যাসও মিশে গেল ভারতের বিপুল খাদ্যসম্ভারে। মুম্বই, পুণে, কলকাতা এবং গুজরাতে পার্সিরা নিজেদের বসতি স্থাপন করেন। বিশেষত মুম্বই সমৃদ্ধ হয় পার্সিদের অবদানে। সেই সঙ্গে ‘খাট্টো-মিঠো' অর্থাৎ টক-মিষ্টি খাবার নিয়ে এখানে চালু হয় পার্সি রেস্তোরাঁ।"

Chipko Movement | হিন্দিতে ‘চিপকো’ শব্দটির অর্থ ‘জড়িয়ে ধরা’ বা ‘আটকে থাকা’। আর গাছকে জড়িয়ে ধরার মধ্য দিয়ে এই আন্দোলনটি গড়ে উঠেছিল বলে এর নাম ‘চিপকো আন্দোলন’। আজ থেকে ৫২ বছর আগে ১৯৭৩ সালে স্বাধীন ভারতের উত্তরাখণ্ডে এই আন্দোলন শুরু হয়। উত্তরাখণ্ডের গাড়োয়াল ও কুমায়ুন হিমালয়ের অন্তর্গত চামোলি জেলায় চিপকো আন্দোলনের সূচনা।

অনেকের মতে, কারখানা স্থাপনের জন্য তৎকালীন আমলারা ১০০টি গাছ কাটতে উদ্যোগী হন। এবং এই কর্মকাণ্ডে বাধা হয়ে দাঁড়ান গ্রামের দুই যুবক- সুন্দরলাল বহুগুনা ও চণ্ডীপ্রসাদ ভট্ট। গাছকে জড়িয়ে ধরে তাঁরা এর বিরোধিতা করেছিলেন। তাঁদের একটাই লক্ষ্য; যেভাবে হোক গাছ ও বন নিধন বন্ধ করে পরিবেশকে রক্ষা করা। চিপকো আন্দোলনকে কৃষকদের আন্দোলন বা মহিলাদের আন্দোলন যা হিসেবেই অনুমান করা হোক না কেন, এটি ছিল ভারতের প্রথম সংগঠিত পরিবেশ আন্দোলন।
