আজকের ভারতবর্ষের নীতি নির্ধারণের গভীরেও এমন এক সূক্ষ্ম কৌশল কাজ করছে, যা সাধারণ মানুষের চিরাচরিত ঐক্য ও যৌথ শক্তিকে প্রতিনিয়ত চূর্ণ-বিচূর্ণ করে দিচ্ছে। সাধারণ মানুষের অধিকার রক্ষার পুরনো আইনি ও প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক কাঠামোকে এমনভাবে বদলে দেওয়া হয়েছে, যার মূল লক্ষ্যই হলো আমজনতার অর্থনৈতিক মেরুদণ্ড ভেঙে দেওয়া এবং তাদের স্বাধীন জীবিকার সব কটি দরজা বন্ধ করে দেওয়া। যে বিশাল শ্রমজীবী ও কৃষক সমাজ একসময় দেশের আসল সম্পদ তৈরি করত, আজ তারা নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় জিনিসের অগ্নিমূল্য আর কর্মসংস্থানের অভাবে দু-মুঠো অন্নের জন্য অন্যের মুখাপেক্ষী হয়ে পড়ছে। আয়ের উৎসগুলো সাধারণ মানুষের হাত থেকে কেড়ে নিয়ে দেশের সিংহভাগ সম্পদ মুষ্টিমেয় কিছু কর্পোরেট ধনকুবেরের হাতে পুঞ্জীভূত করা হয়েছে, যার ফলে শতকরা ৯৫ ভাগ সাধারণ মানুষ আজ এক নতুন ধরনের অর্থনৈতিক গোলামিতে লিপ্ত হয়েছে। আর দেশের দীর্ঘমেয়াদী ও ব্যয়বহুল আইনি প্রক্রিয়াগুলোও পরোক্ষভাবে সেই চরম বৈষম্য সৃষ্টিকারী অর্থশালীদেরই একচেটিয়া সুরক্ষা দিয়ে যাচ্ছে।
অতীতের সেই বিদেশি ঔপনিবেশিক শোষণ আর আজকের নব্য-পুঁজিবাদের এই আধিপত্যের মধ্যে এক অদ্ভুত ও ভয়ঙ্কর মিল রয়েছে। আগে যেভাবে কৃত্রিম বিভেদ তৈরি করে ভারতের ঐক্য নষ্ট করা হতো, আজও ঠিক একইভাবে কায়েমি স্বার্থ চরিতার্থ করতে সমাজকে প্রতিনিয়ত টুকরো টুকরো করা হচ্ছে। তফাত শুধু এটুকুই—তখন শোষণ চালাত সাতসমুদ্র পার থেকে আসা শাসকেরা, আর আজ দেশেরই কিছু ক্ষমতাশালী গোষ্ঠী সাধারণ মানুষের বেঁচে থাকার পথ বন্ধ করে নিজেদের ধনভাণ্ডার বাড়াচ্ছে। আগেকার ঔপনিবেশিক শোষণের মতোই, আজকের জটিল নিয়মতান্ত্রিক ব্যবস্থা ও ক্ষমতার অলিন্দগুলো সাধারণ মানুষের ধরাছোঁয়ার বাইরে চলে গেছে; তা কেবল সেই ধনাঢ্য পুঁজিপতিদেরই বাড়তি সুবিধা পাইয়ে দিচ্ছে, আর দেশের ৯৫ ভাগ সাধারণ মানুষ স্বাধীনতার এত বছর পরেও সেই একই রকম অর্থনৈতিক পরাধীনতা ও বঞ্চনার অন্ধকারে দিন কাটাচ্ছে।
Even in today's India, policies are framed in such a subtle way that they continuously break the unity and collective strength of the common people. The old institutional and legal structures that protected public rights have been altered to weaken the economic backbone of ordinary citizens and close the doors to independent livelihoods. The vast working class, which once built the real wealth of the nation, is now dependent on others for basic survival due to rising prices and lack of employment. Sources of income have been taken away from the common people, and most of the nation's wealth has been concentrated in the hands of a few corporate billionaires, forcing ninety-five percent of the population into a new form of economic slavery. Meanwhile, expensive and lengthy legal processes indirectly continue to shield these wealthy elites.
There is a striking and alarming similarity between past foreign colonial exploitation and today's modern capitalism. Just as artificial divisions were created back then to destroy Indian unity, society is being divided today to serve vested interests. The only difference is that in the past, foreign rulers exploited the land, whereas today, powerful domestic groups are taking away the livelihoods of ordinary citizens to expand their own wealth. Much like the colonial era, today's complex systems and power structures have gone beyond the reach of the common man, merely providing extra advantages to the rich, while ninety-five percent of the ordinary people remain trapped in the same darkness of economic dependence and deprivation.
