Nepal is facing widespread protests after the government imposed a ban on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter. The move, which sparked outrage among the youth and civil society, has escalated into violent demonstrations, resulting in at least 19 deaths and over 100 injuries.

Protests Sparked by Social Media Ban

The government claimed that major social media companies failed to comply with new regulations requiring local registration and operational oversight. On September 4, 2025, these platforms were blocked across the country, triggering immediate backlash.

A youth-led movement known as โ€œGen Zโ€ organized protests against government corruption, unemployment, and restrictions on free speech. Demonstrations quickly turned violent as security forces clashed with protestors.

PM Resigns, Curfew Imposed

As protests spiraled out of control, at least 19 people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured. In response, authorities imposed curfews in Kathmandu and Lalitpur. Under mounting pressure, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post, and the government lifted the social media ban.

Corruption and Unemployment at the Heart of Unrest

The protests reflect deeper issues in Nepal, including rising unemploymentโ€”estimated at around 20%โ€”and widespread corruption. Citizens accuse political leaders of nepotism, with allegations that government officials are enriching their families at the expense of the general public. Restrictions on social media, a primary tool for communication and activism, further intensified the public's frustration.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has strongly criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent remarks made during a rally in Bihar. Mein stated that Gandhi not only targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also disrespected his late mother with inappropriate and offensive words.

Rahul Gandhi must apologize to the people of this country, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and also for the derogatory remarks made against his mother. Such language has no place in Indian politics and is against our democratic and cultural values, DCM Mein asserted while addressing the media.

He further added that political criticism is part of democracy, but crossing the line with unparliamentary language and personal attacks on family members is unacceptable. Mein urged the Congress leadership to take responsibility and issue a public apology for the statements.

The remarks have sparked sharp reactions across Arunachal Pradesh and beyond, with BJP leaders condemning the act and demanding accountability from Rahul Gandhi.
