Full Name: Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya
Born: 15 September 1861
Birthplace: Muddenahalli, Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka, India
He completed his primary education in Muddenahalli and later graduated in Civil Engineering from College of Engineering, Pune (then Bombay Presidency).

🔹 Major Contributions
1. Revolutionary Engineer
Designed automatic sluice gates (first of its kind in India), installed at Khadakwasla Dam near Pune.
Played a key role in the construction of Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam in Mysore – one of Asia’s largest dams at that time.
Introduced innovative irrigation systems that benefited farmers and improved water management in India.
2. Diwan of Mysore (1912–1918)
Modernized the princely state of Mysore and turned it into a model state.
Helped establish Mysore University (one of India’s earliest universities).
Founded several industries:
Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant at Bhadravati
Mysore Soap Factory
Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory
Mysore Bank (later became State Bank of Mysore)
3. Economic Visionary
Wrote the book “Planned Economy for India” which inspired economic planning in India.
Advocated industrialization, education, and self-reliance as key to India’s progress.

🔹 Awards and Honors
Knighted as "Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE)" by the British Government (earning him the title “Sir”).
Awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1955.

Passed away on 14 April 1962 at the age of 101.
His birthday, 15 September, is celebrated every year as Engineers’ Day in India in his honor.
The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum in Bengaluru is dedicated to him.
Numerous roads, institutions, and awards are named after him.
