Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has said the Meghalaya government cannot independently amend central mining laws, despite increasing demands from coal miners for changes that would allow mining activities to resume more easily.
According to Tynsong, several concerns raised by stakeholders involve provisions of national legislation, making it impossible for the state to take unilateral decisions. He maintained that any amendment or exemption linked to central laws would require engagement with the Government of India and adherence to the prescribed legal process.
His remarks come as coal miners continue to press for changes to scientific mining requirements, particularly the minimum land area needed for mining leases.
A presentation by experts and officials is scheduled for June 22 to examine possible legal and policy options available to the sector.
