Anita Wing Lee and Tim Muttoo were both working in East Africa—he building clean water projects, she starting her storytelling journey. They didn’t meet until nine years later in Toronto. In a groundbreaking development, scientists in the Netherlands have discovered a way to generate electricity using the roots of living plants. This innovation relies on **root-based microbial fuel cells (MFCs)**, a sustainable technology that harnesses energy from the interaction between plant roots and naturally occurring bacteria in the soil. When plants perform photosynthesis, they release organic compounds through their roots. Microbes in the soil consume these compounds and, in the process, release electrons as a byproduct. By placing electrodes near the roots, scientists can capture these electrons and convert them into usable electricity.

This technique is being tested in Dutch wetlands, where the moist, oxygen-poor soil provides ideal conditions for microbial activity. While the amount of power generated is currently low—enough to charge small sensors or LED lights—it holds immense promise for off-grid, eco-friendly energy sources. If scaled up, it could transform how we power remote environmental sensors or even homes sustainably.
