๐Ÿฏ Thiksey Monastery is one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries in Ladakh, India, located about 19 km from Leh. Perched dramatically on a hilltop at 11,800 ft, it resembles Tibetโ€™s Potala Palace in Lhasa and is often called its โ€œmini version.โ€

๐Ÿ“ฟ It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and houses around 120 monks. The monastery is a 12-story complex with temples, courtyards, assembly halls, and living quarters.

๐Ÿ—ฟ The highlight is its 49-foot-high Maitreya Buddha statue, the largest in Ladakh, built to commemorate the 1970 visit of the 14th Dalai Lama.

๐Ÿชญ Thiksey is also famous for its annual Gustor Festival (usually in October/November), when sacred mask dances (Cham) are performed.

โ›ฐ๏ธ From its terraces, one gets breathtaking panoramic views of the Indus Valley and the surrounding Himalayas.
