Congratulations to JNU students and the Left Unity for retaining JNU to the progressive fold and sending out a message that it continues its defense of progressive politics and will resist all attacks by the RSS-BJP’s Hindutva-corporate politics.
Whatever ABVP gained in this election must be analyzed thoroughly. Those of us who worked in a JNUSU with similar composition in the central panel posts, and the students, teachers of JNU who survived one of the most notorious attacks of the Sangh Parivaar, exactly 10 years back, knows it well what they are capable of. From the lessons of that time, it is a must to keep a close watch on them as well as to not allow any room to them to attack the university and its students, teachers and staff.
In 2015, the Left contested separately and had a fragmented mandate in the union. Despite that, after the election results were declared, instead of a ‘Victory March’, we had a ‘Unity March’. The exemplary unity with movement followed later. However, the sheer fact of ABVP won one post in the central panel was enough for the progressive forces to forge a unity from the very beginning. I hope that tradition will continue in the days ahead in spirit and actions.
Lastly, what happened in this election needs a deep analysis and the entire Left needs to introspect and be accountable for what unfolded, rather than putting the burden on one organization and singling it out. After all, political abstention does not strengthen ideological battles and debates, political engagement and constructive criticisms do. At the same time, political criticism does not mean an impunity to dictate the politics of other organization. What went wrong with the Left and Ambedkarite alliance is for the alliance partners to sit and review. But this is beyond an audacity to call such an alliance ‘opportunistic’.
As a former member of SFI – the largest left student organization in the country, I can’t but stress that it has worked tirelessly and sincerely to build such alliances through movements in many important campuses of struggles and successfully led them. HCU is one of the campuses where Left Ambedkarite alliance with SFI, ASA and other organizations working amongst the oppressed students, formed much before ‘Jai Bheem Laal Salaam’ slogan was co-opted as a popular slogan in the larger students’ movement. To call such an alliance ‘opportunistic’ is not just an insult to the history of struggles but also shortsighted and sectarian which in turn establishes a sense of hegemonic claims rather than a sense of true Marxist-Leninist approach to movements.
What was more disheartening was to see some of the Left leaders of our generation and the generation before are blatantly using this term and in desperation trying to establish a false narrative. What may have been a local level dispute has now come to take its seat in an ugly turn to public blame solely targeting one organization. Hope they all realize that it is a disservice to the students’ movement and the recently earned mandate, leave apart sending a poor message about fighting ‘fascism’. Hope they restrain from doing this, and act together, leaving aside sectarianism, and differences without losing sight of both immediate and larger causes/purposes.
Red salute JNU!
Students’ Unity Long Live!
