Kotgarh is a scenic sub-tehsil and historic village located in the Kumarsain subdivision of Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. Known for its calm valleys, cedar forests, apple orchards, and rich cultural heritage, Kotgarh holds a significant place in Himachal’s history. It once served as the capital of the Kotkhai-Kotgarh princely state. In 1815 it became part of British India and later joined independent India in 1947. Kotgarh is popularly known as the “Apple Bowl of India.” In 1916, Satyanand Stokes planted the first American apple tree here, which transformed the entire horticulture economy of the region. Today, the apples and cherries grown here are renowned for their premium quality. Kotgarh’s cultural identity includes temple traditions, festivals, local deities, folk tales, and the simplicity of Himalayan village life. This page aims to showcase:

कोटगढ़ हिमाचल प्रदेश के शिमला जिले के कुमारसैन उप-खंड में स्थित एक खूबसूरत उप-तहसील और ऐतिहासिक गाँव है। यह स्थान अपनी शांत वादियों, देवदार के जंगलों, सेबों के बागानों और हिमाचली संस्कृति के लिए विश्वभर में जाना जाता है। इतिहास में कोटगढ़, कोटखाई-कोटगढ़ रियासत की राजधानी रहा है। बाद में राजधानी स्थानांतरित हुई, लेकिन कोटगढ़ की सांस्कृतिक पहचान और महत्व आज भी जीवंत है।
1815 में यह ब्रिटिश शासन का हिस्सा बना और 1947 में स्वतंत्र भारत में शामिल हो गया।
कोटगढ़ को “भारत का एप्पल बाउल” कहा जाता है, क्योंकि 1916 में यहीं सैमुअल इवांस स्टोक्स (जो बाद में सत्यानंद स्टोक्स कहलाए) ने पहली बार अमेरिकी सेब का पौधा लगाया था। इस पहल ने न केवल कोटगढ़ बल्कि पूरे हिमाचल की बागवानी को नई दिशा और पहचान दी। आज भी यहाँ के सेब, चेरी और अन्य फलों की गुणवत्ता अलग पहचान रखती है।
