Chicken Momo (Steamed Tibetan/Nepali Dumplings)
Ingredients
For the dough
2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
½ tsp salt
Water as needed
For the filling
250 g minced chicken
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2–3 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
2 tbsp spring onion, chopped
1 tbsp soy sauce
½ tsp black pepper
Salt to taste
1 tbsp cooking oil or sesame oil
Method
1. Prepare the dough
Mix flour and salt.
Add water gradually and knead into a firm, smooth dough.
Cover and rest for 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the filling
Mix minced chicken, onion, garlic, ginger, spring onion, soy sauce, pepper, salt, and oil.
Combine well and keep aside.
3. Shape the momos
Divide the dough into small balls.
Roll each into a thin circle (about 3–4 inches).
Place 1 tablespoon filling in the center.
Fold and pleat the edges to seal.
4. Steam
Grease a steamer tray lightly.
Arrange momos without touching each other.
Steam for 12–15 minutes until the dough becomes slightly translucent and the chicken is fully cooked.
Simple Momo Chutney
Blend together:
2 tomatoes (boiled)
2–3 dried red chilies (soaked)
2 cloves garlic
Salt
1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice
Serve hot with the chutney.
Healthier Version
If you prefer inexpensive and relatively healthy recipes:
Use whole wheat flour instead of all maida.
Add finely chopped cabbage and carrots to the filling.
Steam only; avoid frying.
