In a tragic incident, Ajit Das, the father of the Shani Temple theft accused Anik Das, allegedly committed su***de by hanging himself from a tree near Chaltabasti on Thursday morning (August 21). Locals suspect that he took the extreme step out of embarrassment over his son’s repeated involvement in thefts and robberies.
His body was first spotted by a university student, who reported the same to Assam University Police Outpost.
As per locals, Anik Das, who had earlier lived near Shilcoorie Camp before shifting to Chaltabasti, was notorious for frequent thefts.
On August 17, Anik Das was arrested for stealing jewellery and valuables from the National Highway Point Shani Temple in Silchar. Police confirmed that he had just been released from jail for another crime before committing this offence on August 16.
Ajit Das's dead body was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem on Thursday afternoon.
