Sonamarg in winter reveals more than snow-clad peaks and the silent course of the Sindh River. Vast white meadows stretch beneath the towering Himalayan ranges, glaciers glisten under pale sunlight and pine forests stand still under heavy snow, creating a landscape of stark, commanding beauty. Yet the valley simultaneously becomes a seasonal economic zone where tourism shapes everyday life. Local guides, pony handlers, transport workers and small traders sustain the winter flow of visitors, while larger hotels and organised operators command a greater share of the revenue generated by the landscape.

For Gujjar and Kashmiri communities, winter demands collective effort, adaptation and reliance on traditional knowledge. Limited mobility, harsh climate and fluctuating tourist inflow define their livelihood patterns. Thus, winter Sonamarg stands as a mountain society structured by labour, seasonal dependence and the broader forces of market-driven development echoing the imagination of Amir Khusrow, who once described Kashmir as “Heaven on Earth.”

Not just a traveler, but a seeker of ridgelines, silence and stories written in snow. Seated between Chakula I and Chakula II, I found where I truly belong; in the high places where the air is thin, but purpose is clear.

This page begins not with a destination, but with a declaration. I am a mountaineer. I am an explorer. I don’t chase summits for glory, but for the discipline of the ascent and the humility of nature. But the dialogue between man and mountain is too vast to be held alone.
