The US city of Minneapolis will now allow the Muslim call to prayer to play from mosque speakers.

Also known as the adhan or azan, the call to prayer can be played by local mosques in the largest city in Minnesota three times a day, provided that the volume is below a certain decibel limit and it isn’t played in the morning or at night.

The bill was presented by city council member Jamal Osman, who has called the move “a signal of the equality and community we have built here.”

“This is America, and we are allowed to share our faith from the rooftops, just like everyone else,” he said, noting that the call is permitted during the same hours allowed for Christian church bells.

The call to prayer was first legalised in the US in the city of Hamtramck, Michigan, in 2004, followed by Dearborn, Michigan, and Paterson, New Jersey.
