Drug Control Dept cracks whip in D.K. Marg, D.H. Pora; 2 firms shut, samples lifted

Srinagar, April 11 : The Drug Control Department has launched intensive inspection drives in remote areas of D.K. Marg and D.H. Pora to ensure strict adherence to regulatory standards and protect public health, officials said on Saturday.

The drives covered several areas, including Nagam, Ahmed Abad, Chimmer, D.K. Marg, Badijahalan, and Kutumarg, they added.

During the inspections, one firm was issued a notice for violating prescribed norms, while operations of two firms were temporarily suspended due to observed deficiencies. Official sources said two drug samples were also collected and lifted for testing and analysis to verify their quality and compliance with standards.

A department spokesperson reiterated the agency’s commitment to strict enforcement of drug regulations, asserting that such inspection drives will continue to ensure the availability of safe and quality medicines to the public.

India Could Have Done More’ to De-escalate US-Iran Tensions, Says Advisor to J&K CM

Srinagar, Apr 11: Senior National Conference leader and Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani on Saturday said Pakistan had played a role in easing tensions in West Asia, while asserting that India’s ties with Israel had limited New Delhi’s ability to take a similar initiative.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here, Wani said Islamabad had done a “great job” during the recent conflict by helping prevent escalation between Iran and the United States.

“First of all, we should have done it because it was a role expected of our country. We were considered a non-aligned country, but now we have been left behind. Our relationship with Israel has become a reason for us not to take this step,” he said.

He said it was positive that efforts were made to avoid a larger conflict. “It is a good thing that someone has taken the initiative to save both countries from nuclear war,” he added.

Responding to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s remarks, Wani described Pakistan’s narrative as “misleading”, but said mediation by third countries was a common feature of global diplomacy.

“This is his own opinion, but there are questions for the rest of us as well. Pakistan has done a role in this regard, and many others have also mediated. Qatar has done it many times. In world foreign policy, when there is a conflict, a third country steps in for dialogue,” he said.

Drug trade funding terror, must be crushed: LG Manoj Sinha

Jammu, Apr 11 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday launched a 100-day anti-drug campaign across Jammu and Kashmir, announcing a series of punitive measures against narcotics smugglers, including cancellation of official documents and attachment of properties.

Addressing a gathering here, Sinha said individuals involved in drug trafficking would face strict action, including cancellation of passports, Aadhaar cards and driving licences, along with freezing of bank accounts and seizure of assets.

He said a standard operating procedure has been introduced to target the financial networks of drug peddlers and dismantle the ecosystem supporting narcotics trade.

“Those destroying the future of our youth will not be spared. Enforcement agencies must ensure that the innocent are not harassed, but the guilty do not escape,” he said.

The lieutenant governor also said authorities would publicly identify major drug peddlers at the police station level to enhance accountability and act as a deterrent.

Highlighting the security aspect, Sinha said drug trafficking was being used to fund terrorism and weaken society, alleging that cross-border networks were pushing narcotics into the region.

“Every consignment is a threat to our youth and society. It is not just illegal trade, but an attempt to destabilise the social fabric,” he said.

Calling for wider public participation, he urged youth, civil society groups and community leaders to join the campaign through awareness drives, including pad yatras across towns and villages.

“This is a collective fight. It cannot be handled by the administration alone,” he said, adding that women, particularly mothers, can play a crucial role in preventing substance abuse.

Sinha said the administration would focus on awareness campaigns, counselling services in educational institutions and outreach to vulnerable groups during the 100-day campaign.

He also announced that new rules governing de-addiction and rehabilitation centres have been notified to ensure proper standards and prevent misuse.

Emphasising a balanced approach, he said while strict action would be taken against traffickers, individuals affected by addiction would be provided treatment, counselling and rehabilitation support.

Beaten, Suspended, Insecure: Kashmiri Students in Rajasthan Cry for Help; JKSA Seeks CM Intervention

SRINAGAR, Feb 18 : The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan, alleging that Kashmiri nursing students at a university in Rajasthan were assaulted during a protest over course recognition, with four students injured and a female student manhandled.

According to the Association, students enrolled in the B.Sc. Nursing programme at Mewar University in Chittorgarh district staged a protest after discovering that the institution allegedly lacks mandatory approvals from the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the Rajasthan Nursing Council (RNC). The students are concerned that without these statutory recognitions, their degrees will be invalid, jeopardising their professional registration and future employment prospects with the course scheduled to conclude in four months.

Speaking to JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami alleged that during the demonstration, a group of students from another state, reportedly backed by local activists, confronted and assaulted the Kashmiri students. "Four students were injured, and a female student was allegedly manhandled. There are attempts to communalize a purely academic issue," Khuehami claimed.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the local police response, stating that the students feel insecure on campus and fear further intimidation.

Khuehami said that the university administration had previously issued written assurances that approvals were forthcoming, but no progress has been made. He stated that the suspension of 33 students for peacefully raising academic concerns reflects poorly on institutional accountability.

The Association has formally taken up the matter with Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas, who assured them that the matter would be looked into.

The JKSA has urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to coordinate with his Rajasthan counterpart, Bhajan Lal Sharma, to ensure the students' safety and academic protection. "Their demands are reasonable: secure the necessary approvals immediately or facilitate their transfer to a recognized institution without academic loss. To Their future must not be jeopardized due to administrative lapses," the Association added.
