*Two Power Department Officials Caught Red-Handed Taking Bribe in Srinagar*

Srinagar, Sept 17 : The Srinagar wing of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday caught two officials of the Power Development Department red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 at Sempora on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Officials identified those arrested as a Junior Engineer and a Section Officer, both posted in the Electric Division Panthachowk. Acting on a complaint, an ACB team laid a trap and apprehended the duo while they were allegedly demanding and receiving the bribe amount.

The two accused were immediately taken into custody, and the bribe money was seized on the spot in the presence of independent witnesses, officials said. “Both the officials were trapped and arrested red-handed while accepting the bribe. They have been taken into custody and further investigation is going on,” an ACB officer confirmed.

The case is being investigated to determine the extent of corruption and to identify whether more officials are involved in the alleged malpractice. The ACB has not ruled out the possibility of wider irregularities in the division.

The ACB has urged citizens to continue reporting instances of corruption, assuring that strict action will be taken against those found guilty, regardless of rank or position. KNT

Police File Attempt-to-Murder Case After Son Allegedly Attacks Mother in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 18 : Police have registered a case in Bemina area of Srinagar after a woman alleged that she was violently assaulted by her drug-addicted son.

Officials said that a 52-year-old housewife, identified as Urfana, approached Police Station Batmaloo with a written complaint, stating that she was physically attacked by her son Adnan, aged around 22. Adnan, the son of Irshad Ahmad Bhat, a resident of New Colony Bemina, was accused of habitual drug abuse and violent behavior.

Police said that after receiving the complaint, cognizance was taken and a formal case was registered under FIR number 72/2025 at Police Station Batmaloo. The case has been booked under section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with section 307 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), which pertains to attempt to murder. Investigation into the matter is underway.

The injured woman has been admitted to JVC Hospital Bemina for medical treatment. Her condition is being monitored by doctors, though officials did not immediately confirm the extent of her injuries.

Police sources told that the case reflects a worrying pattern of rising drug addiction among youth in Srinagar, which in many instances has led to domestic violence and family disputes. In recent months, Srinagar police have repeatedly highlighted how substance abuse is fueling criminal behavior and destabilizing family structures in the city.

Locals in Bemina expressed concern over the incident and urged the administration to intensify its anti-drug campaign. “This is a shocking case. Drug addiction is destroying young lives and now tearing families apart. Strong measures are needed to curb this menace,” said a local resident.

Police confirmed that the investigation is being pursued on priority, and further action will be taken against the accused once preliminary evidence and medical reports are analyzed. KNT

Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, Former Hurriyat Chairman Passes Away at 89

Sopore, Sept 17 : Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, prominent academic, political leader, and former Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, passed away this evening at his residence in Boitengo, zangeer Sopore after a brief illness. He was 89 years old.

Prof. Bhat born in 1935 in the village of Botengo, near Sopore in north Kashmir. He was an erudite scholar, completing his undergraduate studies in Persian, Economics, and Political Science at Sri Pratap College in Srinagar, followed by postgraduate degrees in Persian and a law degree from Aligarh Muslim University.

Before entering politics, he served as a professor of Persian for over two decades. His academic career ended in 1986 when he was dismissed from service on grounds of being a “threat to state security,” a decision that pushed him further into public and political life.

Politically, Prof. Bhat was a co-founder of the Muslim United Front (MUF) in 1986, a coalition which contested the 1987 Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Following alleged electoral irregularities, the MUF was dissolved, and Prof. Bhat went on to lead the Jammu & Kashmir Muslim Conference, and later served as Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

He authored the book ‘Beyond Me, and was known for his outspoken views. Throughout his life, he was considered a moderate voice within the separatist spectrum. He always opposed stone-pelting, gun culture and other means of violence.

Family sources said that his Namaz-e-Janazah will be observed tomorrow at 10:00 AM in his native village in Sopore.

His passing marks the end of a long chapter in Kashmir’s history: one of teacher, thinker, and politician who bridged academia and activism.
