Omar Abdullah Revives Darbar Move After Four Years; Practice to Resume Soon

Srinagar, Oct 17:Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the revival of the traditional bi-annual Darbar Move after a four-year hiatus. The century-old practice, halted by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in 2021, will soon resume following cabinet approval. Addressing a press conference, Omar said the file had been cleared by the Lieutenant Governor. The Darbar Move, introduced in 1872 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, involves shifting the capital between Jammu in winter and Srinagar in summer to ensure administrative access to both regions.

CM Omar announces revival of Darbar Move in J&K

Jammu, Oct 16 (KNO): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the resumption of traditional bi-annual Darbar Move practice after the gap of more than four years. The bi-annual Darbar Move practice was halted by the Lieutenant Governor.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that the cabinet has given nod for the revival of the century-old practice.

“The file was sent to the Lieutenant Governor and has been approved. The government is reviving the practice soon,” he said.

The Cabinet had recommended a return to the full-fledged Darbar Move in September this year.

The practice was initiated in 1872 by Maharaja Gulab Singh to move the capital between Jammu in the winter and Srinagar in the summer.

It continued for over a century, providing administrative access to both regions. The practice was, however, halted by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in 2021—(KNO)

Expired Medicines Distributed at North Kashmir PHC Sparks Outrage, BMO Orders Inquiry

Bandipora, Oct 17, KNT: Locals Thursday alleged that expired medicines were distributed to patients at the Ayushman Bharat Comprehensive Primary Health Centre (PHC) Odina, in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

According to reports, a local female patient suffering from bone and joint pain was prescribed medication by a medic posted at the health centre. However, after collecting the prescribed medicines from the dispensary, the patient discovered that the tablets had already passed their expiry date.

“We are being given expired medicines that can endanger our lives,” said the female patient, showing the expired strips. “This is gross negligence, and the authorities must be held accountable.”

The attendants who accompanied the patient also voiced anger, alleging that the dispensary staff had handed over expired stock without checking the date of manufacture and expiry. “We want the administration to investigate whether this happened by mistake or if expired medicines are being distributed knowingly. Either way, this cannot be ignored,” they said.

When contacted, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Hajin, Dr. Syed Idrees Andrabi, confirmed that he has taken note of the allegations and ordered a detailed investigation. “A committee will be constituted to verify the claims. If it is proven that expired medicines were dispensed to patients, strict action will be taken against the concerned staff,” Dr. Andrabi said.

Meanwhile, locals have appealed to the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir to intervene and ensure accountability, saying that rural health institutions must not become “testing grounds for negligence. [KNT]
