A breakthrough in ocean conservation is finally turning the tide against plastic pollution.
The Ocean Cleanup, founded by Boyan Slat, has deployed System 003 — a 600-meter floating barrier designed to collect plastic waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Using natural ocean currents, the system gathers debris into a central zone, where it is later removed and recycled. Scientists estimate that over 80 million kilograms of plastic are trapped in this region, posing serious risks to marine ecosystems — from plankton to whales.
With improved efficiency and scientific monitoring, this innovation shows that human creativity can actively repair environmental damage. Every piece of plastic removed means a safer ocean for marine life.
