PM Modi Likely to Visit Ladakh, Interact with People and Launch Major Development Projects
Rijiju Announces Prime Minister’s Visit; Says Special Provisions Under Article 371, High Court Bench for Ladakh in Pipeline
LEH/JAMMU, AUGUST 29 (KNC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the Union Territory of Ladakh and interact with people, Union Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju said on Friday, announcing a proposed visit that is expected to be accompanied by a series of major development initiatives.
Rijiju made the announcement while addressing the silver jubilee Founder’s Day celebrations of Druk Padma Karpo School at Shey in Leh. However, he did not disclose the exact date of the Prime Minister’s proposed visit.
According to the Union Minister, several major development projects in Ladakh are at an advanced stage and are expected to be inaugurated or launched during the Prime Minister’s visit.
PM Modi Keen to Visit Ladakh
Rijiju said Prime Minister Modi had been keen to visit Ladakh for some time and would use the visit to interact with the people and share his thoughts on the development and future of the Union Territory.
“Ladakh is very close to the heart of Modi,” Rijiju said, underlining the importance being attached by the Union Government to the region.
He said Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir and the North-Eastern states had remained among the areas receiving particular attention from the Modi Government, especially in terms of infrastructure, connectivity and overall development.
Special Provisions Under Article 371 for Ladakh
In a significant announcement, Rijiju said the Centre was working towards providing special provisions for Ladakh under Article 371.
He said the Ministry of Home Affairs, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was working on the proposed framework and expressed confidence that the measures would materialise soon.
The announcement assumes significance amid long-standing demands in Ladakh for stronger constitutional, administrative, cultural and land-related safeguards.
Rijiju said the proposed special provisions would be aimed at safeguarding the interests of the people of Ladakh and ensuring that the region benefits from a development framework suited to its specific requirements.
Ladakh Witnessing Major Transformation
Highlighting the changes witnessed by Ladakh over the past decade, Rijiju said the region had undergone a major transformation in infrastructure, connectivity and development.
He said the pace of development had increased significantly and pointed to the expansion and improvement of road connectivity across the Union Territory.
According to Rijiju, journeys between different parts of Ladakh that earlier took several days could now be completed within a few hours because of improved infrastructure and connectivity.
He said the transformation was not limited to roads and infrastructure but had also created new opportunities in the economic and social sectors.
New Districts to Improve Governance
The Union Minister also highlighted the creation of new districts in Ladakh, saying the administrative restructuring would help bring governance and government services closer to the people.
He said the benefits of the new administrative units would become more visible as development projects are implemented and public services are expanded across remote areas.
Rijiju also recalled that Union Territory status had been a long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh and said the demand had ultimately been fulfilled.
High Court Bench for Ladakh Soon
Rijiju further announced that a High Court bench would be established in Ladakh in the near future.
He described the proposed judicial facility as another important step towards strengthening institutional infrastructure and improving access to justice for people in the Union Territory.
The establishment of a High Court bench, along with administrative expansion and improved connectivity, is expected to make judicial and public services more accessible, particularly for residents of remote and far-flung areas.
PM’s Visit Likely to Bring Major Development Announcements
The proposed visit of Prime Minister Modi is expected to assume considerable significance for Ladakh, particularly with several development projects likely to be inaugurated or launched.
The visit may also provide an opportunity for the Centre to outline its future roadmap for infrastructure, connectivity, administration and socio-economic development in the strategically important Union Territory.
Rijiju said the Modi Government would continue to accord priority to Ladakh and work towards ensuring that the benefits of development reach people across the region.
With the Prime Minister expected to interact directly with the people and announce or dedicate major development initiatives, his proposed visit is likely to generate significant interest across Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.(KNC)
