Every time I pass through Watal Kadal and look at this house standing quietly on the banks of the Jhelum, I am instantly pulled back into the memory lane of my early childhood. This is my Matamaal the place where my world began, where I made my very first friends, and where the foundation of who I am was laid.
​Before it became the sanctuary of our family, I’m told this historic structure served as the area's first chest disease hospital. But to me, it was simply the home of two extraordinary souls my maternal grandfather, Mohd Yasin Shah, and my grandmother, Hajira Yasin. They were the definition of kindness. My grandfather truly possessed a heart of gold, matched only by the boundless love and warmth of my grandmother.
​Though the house now belongs to a new family who were incredibly kind enough to let me step inside today and revisit my blurred, beautiful memories the spirit of my grandparents still lingers in these walls. Because it is now protected as a heritage property, it remains untouched by time, preserved exactly as it lives in my heart.
​Walking through the neighborhood today brought me an overwhelming sense of peace. The neighbors still welcome me with open hearts and loving smiles, generously sharing stories of my childhood, my mother’s early days, and the legacy my grandparents left behind. It’s a bittersweet, beautiful feeling. I took a few pictures today just to capture a piece of this peace, gratitude, and history.
​Thank you to the current owners for preserving this sanctuary, and for letting a grandson come home, even just for an afternoon.......

Funny how some people in Kashmir are outraged by a few minutes of responsible off-roading, yet stay completely silent about the mountains of plastic bottles, wrappers, and garbage left behind every single day.
Tyre tracks fade with time. Plastic doesn't. It remains for decades sometimes centuries. Yet there's barely any enforcement, no meaningful fines, and little accountability. That's the real absurdity.
If you're genuinely concerned about protecting nature, start with littering, illegal dumping, and pollution that scar our valleys every day. Selective outrage isn't environmentalism it's hypocrisy. Nature deserves more than performative activism.
And if I ever become Chief Minister, I'd take a practical approach. I'd legalize adventure activities in a controlled, regulated manner by designating specific areas for off-roading, organizing licensed expeditions, promoting mountain summits, international adventure tourism, and river rafting under strict environmental guidelines.
At the same time, I'd impose heavy fines and even imprisonment for repeat offenders on those who litter, dump waste, or damage our environment. Vehicle modifications would be legalized through proper regulations, just as they are in many developed countries.
Kashmir deserves responsible adventure tourism, a thriving automotive culture, and opportunities that give its youth more reasons to stay inspired without compromising the environment.

That's just one part of my vision. We'll talk about healthcare another day. 😉
